Uniloads - Avoid like the plague!

Not a deliberate resurrection of a thread. But I got a call from these people today offering me work! :open_mouth:
I don’t know where they got my number from. Someone is taking the ■■■■ I think. I do tradeplating for another firm, maybe they gave my details unwittingly? They did promise a lot TBH. So I dunno what to think after finding these threads on here whilst Googling them. :open_mouth:

Keep away Ade…nowt but bullshiners…brother inlaw had a stint with them…got sucked in with all the flannel… left in middle of nowhere ended up out of pocket, the job is ok if you like to live like a tramp sleep in vans in winter etc., take it which ever way you like…but from the horses mouth leave well alone… :open_mouth:

I think after looking at it on here…I’ll ignore it. The crowd I’m with now don’t pay for travel, but pay a decent mileage(not hourly rate) And paid on time weekly. So the more mileage ,the more cash. Hitching is ■■■■ easy with trade plates. The longest wait I had was 40 mins so far. Thanks .

I was considering applying but did a quick Google check and was directed here.
Glad I did so no time wasted.
Thanks for all the posts.

The week before last I was offered, and accepted, a position on Uniloads’ induction course. The lady that called me assured me that travel expenses upto £50 would be reimbursed and that we would all recieve £250 tax free at the end of the course (she stated this would be Thursday afternoon).

Having been unemployed since before xmas and unable to claim benefits, I borrowed £150 to fund this, thinking I would be able to repay this yesterday (end of course).

OK, arrived Monday morning and spent a day in the classroom sucking eggs with 5 other drivers, all of whom were in similar positions to myself. Spent the night in a ‘Kazi’ of a guest house and then on Tuesday morning, headed to MAN UK in Swindon to pick up 4 vehicles destined for Broxburn in Scotland.

We were driven down in a minibus by the trainer and he then followed us as we drove to Scotland. Spent Tue night in a truckstop (another Kazi) Nr to Carlisle and Wednesday morning drove the rest of the way to Broxburn. Told at this stage that course ended on Friday and not Thursday as previously told on phone! Cue lots of (zb) off drivers!! Anyway…

We were then delivered back to Warrington in minibus to spend another night in 1st kazi guest house. Told at this stage that no ‘bulk collections’ available (remember, there are 6 of us on course) and that we would be going home Thursday afternoon…cue drivers phoning wives etc…changing plans AGAIN!

Arrived in Classroom Thursday morning dressed in best clothes for day in classroom and onward train journey home. Team leader enters class room, who wants to work this avo and tomorrow? Naturally, no-one did as we had already changed our plans twice by this stage and were dressed and prepared to be going home that afternoon. No problem, or so we thought!

Half an hour later, trainer is called out of room. When he re-enters, informs us we are staying til Friday and that we will be going out that afternoon for a driving assessment (bear in mind we had all just driven to Scotland under the watchful eye of a trainer) and for a hitch hiking practice excercise. The plan was to dump us on the M6 without our trade plates and in our best clothes and get us to hitch home back to Warrington!

Now, dont get me wrong, I have no probs with hitching if I need to but this was just a complete ■■■■ take!!! Naturally, everyone voiced there concerns and this was ultimately cancelled.

Right, rewind to start of week…we were issued with O2 XDA phones. I noticed on mine that there was a collection of short video clips, some of them pornographic. I had a laugh at them and thought nothing more of it. These were handed back in Thursday morning, we were then issued with non-training versions of the phones.

OK, fast forward to yesterday (Thursday) lunchtime, just after we had voiced our concerns and unwillingness to hitch for the sake of it. By this stage, it was becoming obvious that people were getting aggitated, both us drivers and the Uniloads staff (who incidentaly, couldnt arrange a P up in a brewery). 1 of the guys on the course, upped and offed…just had enough by this stage. Another one shortly followed him!

Half an hour later, someone who I later learned was the Ops Mgr, stuck his head round the door and asked the trainer if he could have a quick word.

Ten mins later he re-appeared and asked me to pack up my things and follow him. He took away the PDA I had just been issued along with my trade plates. It was obvious I was being canned but had no bloody clue as to why■■?

Taken to a room whereby I was addressed by this idiot Ops Mgr that didnt even have the decency to introduce himself. I had to ask hiim who he was AFTER he had canned me.

He produced the initial training PDA I had been issued with, stuck it in my face showing ■■■■■ clips and asked me what the score was? Naturally, I denied them being anyhting to do with me and said they were already there when I got it! He said that was impossible as they are wiped clean after every training session and that the date next to the clips showed the date I was issued it. I argued that that date was the date I viewed the clips last and that they were nothing to do with me. How stupid would it be to leave them on there if it had of been me?

Anyway, end result, “we feel we cant employ you”!!

When asked if I was going to get my £250, was told “It’s upto the MD, but I doubt it”!!!

I was then (almost forcibly) ejected from the building and told not to contact them again!!!

[zb] [zb]s!!!

I have borrowed money, given up a week where I could have been job hunting AND driven a lorry the length of the country for them, what do I get back…? Jack!!

I am now seriously out of pocket, in debt with my GF’s mother…(not good as she reluctantly lent me the money in the 1st place)…and actually in a worse position than I was before. Cant even afford petrol to job IV’s now :frowning:

I have a very sneaky suspicion that Uniloads do this quite regularly in order to get vehicles moved for free. Due to the nature of the job, they have real problems recruitng drivers …I just cant believe that a company would stoop so low as to do this to an innocent man just trying his damned hardest to make a living. Gutted isnt the word…was driven to tears for the first time in years by these ■■■■■■■■■

Has anyone any idea what I can do to get my money Im owed? There was no written contract, in fact nothing in writing atall that mentioned the £250!! It was all verbal promises over the phone!

Can’t believe I have been such a mug!

Thanks for reading and I hope this serves as a warning to anyone else considering Uniloads…stay well away from them!!!

Much as I can appreciate sentiment, they had to go. L.

when you delivered the trucks to scotland ,did you use a tachograph as this could be used to prove you work, there by gaing them 2 days pay.

did you have to pay for the truckstop .if so do you have a recipt.

do you have anything to prove you worked for them for that short space of time.

i dont know anything about the tradeplating buisness so dont know if yo need a tachograph

jon

No tachos I’m afraid…they took them off of me as well!!

Ihave just got off of the phone to theiir patronising arse of an Operations Manager. Having threatened them with legal action and going to the papers, MP’s etc…I now have his assurance that I will be paid for 4 days (£200)!!!

Time will tell…it still doesnt make me feel any better though, how can companys be allowed to operate like this? :unamused:

If it were me I would get the money then see if the papers would give you something for your story, might not be much but worth a try and if they did it would certainly stop them doing again and could even damage their business.
Just a thought on what I would do if someone did that to me, but then again i’m :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp:

Paul

as they say

verbal contract ain’t worth the paper its wrote on :open_mouth:

i thought all companys by law had to give you a contract of employment to sign.

im sure better qualified people will come along and advise better then me, im just a unqualified steering wheel jockey. :open_mouth:

jon

They must give you a contract within the first 13 weeks of starting the job but you dont have to sign it, but if you dont sign it and still report for work the next day, it’s as good as signing ,because of the fact you returnd to work ( unless you are going in to tell them that you disagree with the terms of the contract) means that you agree with the terms and conditions.

It looks to me that the above situation was more of a job interview than actually already been given the job.

i agree with you unbelivable way to treat people its disgusting if i was you i would take the 200quid of them by them paying you that it proves you have done some work for them then they would get major hassel for the rest of the cash.
i cant belive they thought they could get away with you thumbing a lift back to warrington instead of the train…

oh sorry didnt realise it was a training exercise

it disgust me that this goes on and they get away with it.

You need to report everything to the Traffic Commissioner for that area. They don’t have to have an O licence for the TC to act. It comes into the “disrepute” area.

iworked for them when i first started driving i did the training week got paid a week later got £370 then i did a week on my own went from tdg runcorn to sheffield from barnsley the mercedes place to tesco purfleet or what ever its called near the dartford tunnel then got told there was nothing for me for three days so i ended up staying with my uncle in singlewell for a week and jibbed them off got paid about a month later about £250 ish they really are [zb]

If it needs stars, it’s not allowed. L.

Has anyone looked at their pay scale - now there is an ambiguos pay scale if ever I saw one. It does not mention if the Regions are paid on where you live or where you are driving through? It states seniors with * but does not indicate if the publishd wages are for seniors or not, and it does not say if that rate is per hour per day or per hour driving etc. Very dodgy.

Have just spoken to them - cos their site is so crap - pay is 20p less ph then advertised on the site - paid only for hours behind the wheel (now that is a crap way of earning money) and hitchiking allowance is 21ppm.

How on earth does a company like this find drivers!!! Oh and he said it’s 4 nights out a week with £23 per night - but where would you sleep? In a wagon that may be full of crap, having to cart sleeping gear around with you - what happens if you don’t get a collecion for that night - where are you suppposed to sleep then■■?

It amazes me that anyone would even entertain the idea of working for a shower like that. (And the guy I spoke to was not exactly forthcoming or making me feel like I would want to work there)

Sound like a right bunch of numpty’s…definately one to avoid. :unamused: :unamused:

i would try my damdest to get back on with them, give them duff details (shouldnt be too hard) and dump one of their units in a nice quiet spot :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp:

I don’t think they can do this, as you’re required to carry them yourself. Send them a letter demanding that (at the very least) the last one be returned, or you will bill them for the work you won’t be able to do because you can’t carry your previous week’s tacho. Then send them a bill required to be paid within 28 days, then threaten to take them to the Small Claims Court for non-payment.

i’m assuming these were new vehicles. I’m pretty sure vehicles not yet put into service, ie. being delivered to their new owners are excempt from tacho’s so no requirement for them to be kept or used.

Thanks for the replies guys!

Have decided to take my £200 (if I ever get it - we’ll see) and run! Want nothing more to do with this operation!

Some good points made above…

Tachos not required in unregistered vehicles - correct, however Uniloads require you to enter details on reverse of a chart anyway - jobsworths. If the vehicles is registered, wether on trade plates or not, it requires a tacho in the normal way.

£23 a night allowance…bear in mind that the law states you cannot take daily rest in any vehicle unless it has a properly designated sleeper cab. A good 50% of their work is with day cabs/ sprinters etc…now can someone please advise where you can get an (decent) eve meal, B&B for £23■■? They refuse to pay extra aswell!! :unamused:

My train ticket cost £76 return, they also refused to reimburse me over £50, saying I should have hitched…WTF■■?

All in all this have left a very bad taste in my mouth…and left me seriously skint and in trouble with the future MIL!! Never mind the fact that me and the missus are unable to eat for the rest of the month :frowning:

These guys take on approx 6 new drivers for an induction course EVERY single week of the year!!! Would appear that they lose abot the same amount every week by being a bunch of complete arrogant idiots aswell!!

As for the guy that called them up…the attitude you recieved on the phone was very typical of the attitude from EVERYONE in that company. Not one person smiled or said hello as you walked around the office, more like looked at you as if they had just trodden in you!!!

AVOID guys!!

Anyway, anyone know of any class 2 work going in Surrey/ SW London?? Desperate to work and will turn my hand to anything, any hours, any distance…Tried the agencies but nothing doing at the moment. Can only offer 1 maybe 2 days a week if that!
