Now we are having Smart Tachographs

Johneboy:
Basically he does a local load or two a night and then loads multiple trucks/ trailers for the rest of the night. Driving onto weighbridge, weighing himself in, driving into shed, loading himself, back onto weighbridge etc etc, means he does less than 30 secs driving per minute so it isn’t recorded as driving on a tacho. Because of this he leaves his card in the truck he did his deliveries in and drives the others without a card. I think all would agree it’s a bit of a ball ache to insert it in and eject it from every truck but would it cause problems for day drivers if the lack of card was picked up and they would end up continuously getting pulled?

A lot of lorries are legally moved without a card while at base and the DVSA know this.

I imagine they’ll be looking for vehicles currently running without a card, I’m not sure if they will be able to tell how long a vehicle was run without a card before the current shift started.

If it was really about safety and fair play, the employer and driver would get fined simultaneously for drivers hours offences.

It’s just more state oppression, and it will only increase over time. Leaving the EU won’t make any difference to mass surveillance - our government is a world leader in it.

Sixties boy:
.

Why are we still taking more bs from the Brussels dictatorship we are leaving
[/quote]
Because we’ve not left yet and when we do, we’ll have to sign up to EU regulations, so we can do some half baked deal with the EU to stop companies like Airbus and BMW from pulling out of UK.
[/quote]
We are leaving the EU, it isn’t going to go away, If you want to trade, visit, buy, sell or drive across their border you are back in the club and will follow their rules. If your not in the EU, transport operations will follow AETR which are the same rules.

Personally I think “State Oppression” is too strong a term, but otherwise you’re spot on.
What you say about employers and drivers both receiving penalties for (some) driving offences is very valid. An employer should keep a check on their employees actions.
Habitual offenders should be dealt with strongly not given a “nod’n’wink” so long as their offences lead to more profit for the haulier.

Do bosses need more powers to dismiss or fine bad drivers? Would this be an easy excuse to get rid of a face that doesn’t fit?
I’d doubt it. Bad tacho records would stand up well in a wrongful dismissal claim, surely. And habitual cowboys wouldn’t get through the first few months before showing their true colours to any proper employer.

I try and keep my cards clean, and normally succeed. [emoji56]
I’ve no great issues with my card being checked whilst driving at motorway speed, rather than being waved onto the end of a queue at a DVSA check.
If remote reading targets the bad 'uns and keeps me rolling unhindered, why not?

I hate all this type of hi tech crap, but from my point of view it aint going to make a [zb] of difference as I run legal as I’ve no desire to do the opposite just to make my firm richer at the expense of my licence and livliehood.

We actually got a memo about some drivers running without cards etc :open_mouth: , why tf would anybody be so [zb] dumb these days to run bent when drivers are getting jailed for it in extreme cases.
It’s pricks like that who are keeping wages down as some unscrupulous outfits are pricing work up based on the fact that they know some drivers are thick enough to break the rules for them.
So tbf based on that bring it on I couldn’t give a [zb].

Or another way of putting it may be:
“If you’re doing nothing wrong, you’ve nothing to worry about”?
Which is of course why you don’t object to in cab cameras also?

[emoji4]
Yeah, I know, I know.

I (purposely) did not say that though…did I ?
I personally have nothing to worry about on that score but the way you put it is much different.
(I know you’re taking the ■■■■ btw   )

Recently done my tacho refresher, and as yet there is no training on calibrating ,checking them .and the tooling required has still to be approved …So like everything it will all be eft to the last minute …Apparently there will be a tool that checks that it can be checked remotely, which will be part of the calibration

Whats the job coming to.Smart tachos remotely read.Drivers routed by planners, tracked.Questions asked if you stop without a reason.Your lifes not your own. Top it off with crap wages[what ive read on here].The jobs not worth a w…k.

Glad I did the job old style, long ret.

As much as I hate big brother, and as much as my pulse races automatically at the mere mention of surveillance, I’m not the least bothered by this particular thing. The reason is I personally run as straight as a dye regarding tachos. So if DVSA remotely view my tacho info, and see it’s straight, I imagine they’re much less likely to pull me in with the potential to check my load… which isn’t always strapped to within an inch of its life, and not always a positive fit.

It’ll likely be a large proportion of the Irish, Johnny flip-flops, and one-man bands getting pulled.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
i wonder if we will get pilled cue to there being no signal with the tacho being switched off and bypassed?
or will the guy next to us getting the tug by mistake

Nah, by that time some whizz kid will bound to have developed an electronic dummy ‘my-tacho-is-switched-on-and-I’m-100%-legal’ device to fool whoever is reading the tacho. Crack on for that boat drive

^^^^^^^^^
as soon as someone makes it,then you can be sure there will be a paddy and a flipflop that can break it and life will continue
