Individual assessments for diabetics, (major edit)

This is encouraging. In essence the consultation will allow drivers with insulin treated diabetes to drive provided that:

ï‚•ï€ There has not been any severe hypoglycaemic event in the previous 12 months;
ï‚•ï€ The driver has full hypoglycaemic awareness (ie there is adequate warning of any hypoglycaemia so that this does not become a safety issue when driving);
ï‚•ï€ The driver must show adequate control of the condition by regular blood glucose monitoring, at least twice daily and at times relevant to driving;
ï‚•ï€ The driver must demonstrate an understanding of the risks of hypoglycaemia; and,
ï‚•ï€ There are no other debarring complications of diabetes (such as visual problems or loss of sensation).

The proposed regulations are slightly stricter than the European requirements, insisting on an annual review with a diabetes specialist (rather than 3 yearly fo rthe EU) for drivers on insulin.

More information on the consultation process and how to respond is given at:

scania245:
IF the diabetic can promise they wont black out an mow people down great.
but a diabetic needs normal hours ,ie evrey day injection /food,
ive worked with guys that were about to lose there licence.they wanted this they wanted that.
guess what buissness doesnt work like that.
so if you inject to stay normal you shouldnt be driving.
ive been sacked for less,

Now,it don’t works yet for People with Diabetes Type 2 so how will it work for People with Diabetes type 1?
At moment i see here are People with Diabetes Type 2 having 1 or 2 Day Work a Week,which isn’t enough to cope with ordered Eating habit.
i know,its bad during January/February,but,why do Healthy Young under 50’s get between 4 and 6 day a week?
Has not to do with Racism,as not only Foreign seat at Home with short Work. Its Politic.
Now,well,…
How will someone with Tyabetes type 1 cope with that?

there some useful stuff about Diabetes in a post in the Health and Family forum

I hope the dvla/government sorts this out as i was type2 diabetic for 5 years before they put me on insulin. for the last 2 years ive had to put up with driving vans (which at least is a job!) but miss driving buses and trucks. from what i understand, the new rules are for trucks only (correct me if im wrong please) im still young and fortunate to be able to go back to truck driving, but without clear timeline or requirements, it feels like i may be driving vans for a very long time!!!

Dear All
I have just received a letter from DVLA having responded to their consultation about diabetes (although it doesn’t answer the specific issues I raised!).

Parliament would seem to have approved new regulations allowing drivers with insulin treated diabetes to have a class 2 licence, and that the intention is to introduce this from October. One of the requirements is that the driver must show adequate control of the condition by regular blood glucose monitoring, at least twice daily and at times relevant to driving. To be able to show this, the recommendation is that drivers must be able to show this information for a period of three months, and to have a blood glucose monitor with a memory function. If you want to be able to apply when the regulations change you will need to start doing this now. If you haven’t got a meter with a memory function, or not got one at all, then it may be worth contacting you GP/practice or diabetic nurse or popping down to Boots or the local pharmacist to get one.

Good luck.
