Gardner 6LYT

Robert Wellock has restored an ERF E16 with a 6LYT in it. There’s a feature article about it in Classic & Vintage Commercials.

If I remember right everything drove off the bell housing instead off the front like all early gardners

Punchy Dan:
So various ERF E16s left ,evidence of one Foden the above C reg but are there anymore or even a Seddon Atki example around ?

What about Guy Big J, surely there must have been some of these with the 6LYT and twin splitter… :imp: :imp: :imp:

That motor is a credit to Robert, some work gone in to get it to that standard,

We had a 401 6x2 demo with 6lxyt on a c reg , got couple of photos somewhere , it was in demo colours went well and was good on fuel, but we just had a 8 wheeler in end with 6lxdt in, they were trouble from new

Didn’t Torrington Transport from Devon run a Gardner 6 x 2 401, named the White Knight I think?

They did Pete - and it had the motor removed & replaced with a ■■■■■■■ 320. A lot went the same way at various other operators too. John Killingbeck had one in a double-drive ERF C Series which was new - that bit the dust in favour of a 14-litre ■■■■■■■ too.

One of the two ERF E16, Gardner 6LYT with twin-splitter, acquired with Lowe of Paddock Wood. Both were 6x4 units. I photographed this on 29/09/1996 on the fuel pump at Turners Newmarket depot, early Sunday morning IIRC. Both were soon disposed of; one was sold to Eric Vick, the other had a compressor fitted on the chassis and was used internally at British Sugar Wissington factory. It was there for a good number of years, maybe it still is.

These would have been a most unusual purchase for Lowes. The company was ■■■■■■■ through and through thanks in part to two of their fitters: Brian Barden and Eddie Bowden, neither of whom was very fond of Gardner. Even stranger when considering that Paddock Wood was the main operating centre for Jack Henley who at this time had switched his long standing loyalty from Gardner to ■■■■■■■■

Brian and Eddie however had left Lowes well before the LYTs appeared to set up Transport and Refrigeration Services on the North Farm Estate in Tunbridge Wells. Transport and Refrigeration was to develop into a Foden Service Agent and a Recovery Company with sometime customers with familiar names like: Farrants, Chapmans, Tilcon, G.Burgess & son, Nitrovit, and Mustills. Some years after start up one of the now better known ■■■■■■■ afficianados started his apprenticeship with them…Mick Gould.

I have a vague recollection of seeing a vehicle like this for sale in the classified ads in the back of a classic lorry magazine. I have a huge pile of old magazines, so it may take some time to find it…

Those names bring back memories from the past. A sad reflection, but I think the only one still going is G.Burgess & Son.
