Hi Wagsie, nice to see you posting again, seen you’ve been looking in, hope you are keeping ok. That’s a fair old list of firms there! some I remember some I don’t, but It got me thinking. I remember a couple of chaps I came across at R.H.A. meetings, that quite impressed me at the time. One, a fine upstanding fellow, who’s name, I believe was Bert Neeley, and traded as Neeley Transport. I heard some years later that his company had folded, being caught up in a lot of bad dept, (which came as a shock to me, as he seemed very professional and rock solid,) however I could never get this substantiated. Another was a chap of slight statue, but very articulate, and IIRC was manager of Chambers & Cook. I think his name was Pat, could have been Blackburn, but not too sure on that. He was into speedboat racing in a big way and was a Champion at some level but I can’t remember what! He later had a big accident from which he took a long time to recover, but I was told he did fully in the course of time. I seem to remember hearing that his son followed in his footsteps, but again I am a bit vague on that" Funny what comes into your head isn’t it, but was just wondering, does anyone remember either of these guys.
Hiya. BigG-unit…Yeah I’m still around, take a look on here now and then when i get the chance, busy with all sorts of things at the moment…
I do remember Neely transport, From coleshill I believe…Chambers & cook still about but don’t know anyone there…
Anyway mate how’s you doin.these days?.. I’m looking at goin back on the road in the new year…Had a bit of a break now and everything is okey dokey…
right must go chat very soon and you look after yourself…
All the best …Wagsie…

my dad used to work for j&s hemmings of pennsnett, dudley. It was mainly all steel work out of round oak, would like to see some photos if anybody has some.
I know this is three years down the line but my Dad also used to work at J&S Hemmings. His name is Mac Brewer and worked there until the early seventies. In his words "they had the best drivers and the best fleet at that time and it was a great place to work. I also used to work with a friend whose dad also worked there, his dads name was Pete Huntingdon but he unfortunately passed away a few years ago. Along similar lines I also live very close to another ex Hemmings driver by the name of John Corbett. I am not sure of your Dads name but I do know if mine knows him he would want me to pass on his best.
With regards to pictures, I know Phil Hemmings has a few but I don’t know if he would want them published?
Great to hear of someone remembering a great company.
Does anyone also remember a firm called UNISANT who were based in Powke Lane, Old Hill. They had a very mixed fleet of Guys Bedfords, Leylands and finally Saviems, this was because they had the Saviem Agency in the mid-seventies?
Can anyone tell me where Patent Shaft was ? cos I remember going there in the 70s as a kid with my Dad taking Scrap in.They made me get out each time so the security bods made me a cup of Tea while waiting. I seem to remember it being on the right just before a Railway bridge and once through the Gate it when’t uphill to the Weighbridge I think.
Cheers.
What about Adam Jones from Blackheath…Kite Bros…Hadley Industries aka George Green Transport Downing St W.brom.
Lowe Bros at the bottom of Powke Lane. John Sturman, Park St Blackheah…UKD that was in Oldbury…and was it P.J Parkes that had those red Maggies…those are all I can think of right now.

Hi Colin,
Adam Jones, George Green, and Lowes are all still going strong however Kites finished around 15 years ago and I am not sure about John Sturman & UKD.

sounds like you was going into the leabrook road entrance into the rail yard.the road is still there but its more like a service road into a city link depot now
i used to work for w a brotheridge in wednesbury about 22 years ago.they had a mixture of wagons, they used to sub work off and too kites from netherton
hiya,
Yes Chris quite a bit into Whessoe’s, the Bradord job was a bit too far South for a return load to our place, Glenndinning used to load Hampton’s lads back to Brum from the old British Steel works at Consett which was the BRS main source of work, a case of two many eggs in one basket, when the works shut the BRS depot finished a sad time.
thanks harry long retired.

Hi Curnock,
Now there’s a blast from the past
I remember going into W A Brotheridges yard before they moved to Wednesbury when they were in Delph Road, Brierley Hill (Now Delph Trading Est) with my Dad in the late 70’s when I was a kid. If I remember rightly they were predominatly Commers and Dodges at the time.

Was that when Keltruck went on that manic buying spree buying Genners (Quarry Bank), Gauden Sheppard (Halesowen), along with H Fellows and a firm in Wolverhampton whose name escapes me?
