50 mph for cars?

jakethesnake:
Cannot understand why some get so peed off with cars going slowly. They are allowed. Either sit behind them at a safe distance or if you have the power pass them. :unamused:

Because there are slow drivers, and then there are s l o w drivers. It is just as dangerous to drive too slowly as it is to drive too fast, especially on the motorways !!

Mazzerā€¦

Not through a contraflow? I thought the point of motorways was to keep traffic flowing and not about getting from A to B quickly?
Agree about Europe but less restrictions going through roadworks normally but just as many lunatics in such a hurry.

Many years ago I lived on an island with a maximum speed limit of 35 mph, but the rich still had their Ferrari Dinos, E types and Aston Martins.

As someone mentioned a lot of lights need rephasing junctions looking at. And I donā€™t know why we canā€™t adopt a system used is a few countrys. And let us turn left at a red light junctions if the coast is clear

Weā€™ve got the ā€œturn left at any timeā€ here and it can be bloody dangerous with some of the loonies on the road.

. I know you have it works fine when not much traffic around.
You ever drove in newzeland? I decide to nip over to north island last time was in oz. Hired car for few weeks. Was getting lots of cars cutting me up beeping. Was told not by hire company . Although they should. Of told me.
But rules there if your driving down a road and a car coming in opposite direction wants to turn right. Ie cross your lane to turn into a side street they have right of way . You have to slow down give way to them. Theory being they can be sat there for ages waiting for a space to cross causing a tail back behind him. .Now that is dangerous esp if you donā€™t know.

Who mentioned contraflows if there is a contraflow in place then it is only temporary until the work is done and the limit is normally 50. reduce the limit to 50 in normal conditions and you will have people thinking 40 is to fast, the problem in the UK is a lack of instruction on how to use motorways. The amount of people doing 50 in a car hunched over the steering wheel, wheel held in a white knuckle grip it is quite obvious they are cacking themselves completely unaware of what is going on around them, overtook one this evening on the M5, 50mph behind a Tesco lorry be lucky if they were two car lengths from the back of Mr Tesco, accident waiting to happen.

NZ Land transport saw sense in 2012 and reversed the give way priority at junctions much to everyones relief.

Overtake them ?

Wow Iā€™d never have thought of that :bulb:

HGVs are confined to the inside lane on the M4 roadworks between 13 and 12 with predictable results from car drivers.

another moneymaker because they know cars, vans, and hgvs will not stay at 50mph,which means thousands of fines everyday for speeding, lets face it how many do you see keeping to the speed limit,i reckon there will be a revolt if it goes ahead, car drivers are happy to see us regulated all the time but do it to them and they will not be happy

Too slow, too fast, some are never happy. Suppose if they stuck to the speed limit some would still moan. Get a grip guys as we are far from perfect ourselves.

I drive to melksham every Friday via the A350,the national speed limit on some sections if you have been on it is 50MPH,for cars itā€™s 60,i get sick to the back teeth of some car drivers poodling along at 40/45 MPH in these sections, all they do is cause a chain reaction behind them until the furthest vehicle at the rear is probably doing around 20MPH,that is not right,if you are not comfortable or feel competent enough to stick to the national speed limit then stay off the road, these people cause hassle for others.

Total nonsense. Restricting everyone to 50 just means traffic gets bunched up, rightly or wrongly frustration arises due to people not using the right lanes resulting in tail gating, people forced to undertake etc. The amount of accidents in all these 50mph roadwork zones is surely all the evidence we need that bunched up traffic causes problems.

Car & wagon drivers are both much happier when the speed difference is keeping us out of each others way & the road is safer for it imo.

I know the pipe dream is probably for all the traffic to be gliding along at 50mph with 2 second gaps, but a pipe dream is all that will ever be whilst people are driving.

When the speed limit on trucks was 40 MPH on single carriageway roads I used to get convoys of trucks behind me because they couldnā€™t be bothered to comply with the law. Truck drivers will never be satisfied whatever the rules are.

Well you have a problem, because the car drivers are doing nothing wrong. They are perfectly legal doing 40 to 45 mph as there is no minimum speed limit on the A350 and there is nothing to say you have to do the maximum that is posted.
Drivers like yourself seem to think everyone should drive at a speed that suits them and that is just plain selfish.
Personally what I hate to see on roads like the A350 are wagon drivers being aggressive towards car drivers because they are not driving at the speed they would like them to.
Some drivers need to learn manners and show respect for other drivers.

PS I suspect most of the cars doing 40 to 45 mph are really doing about 50 to 55 mph as that seems to be the norm most places I go.

Yeah just as you enter the 50mph limit the cars goes past you and then all move into the inside lane to do 40mph.

As few years back I was driving on the A17 at Holbeach and noticed a lack of oncoming traffic. This could mean an accident I thought but no it was a tractor plodding along, in itā€™s wake were 112 vehicles who had no chance of passing it. The previous record I noted was a Morrisons lorry on the A47 with no less than 47 vehicles escorting it.
