Sad but inevitable. Amtrak never established themselves as a major player in the overnight parcels business, by no means the worst but always second fiddle to the likes of Parceline and Business Post.
In that game (and I speak from experience as a former Nighfreight depot manager) you either need to be a household name to survive when the crunch comes, or be diverse enough to support the parcels biz through until things get better, as Initial have done with City Link.
I think you will find City Link is also in the pile, Initial (Rentokil) have been loosing money hand over fist. Cant see them hanging onto Citylink for too much longer. They have already liquadated a large part of the company (Initial) by closing depots and selling off large sites in London. Don't think Rentokil will be around for too much longer in their present form, but then they were a company well behind the times!!! Amtrak used to have a decent product lineup, but as the other parcel carriers rationlised their businesses and invested in more technology Amtrak fell behind. They wont be the last parcel company to go in the short term, it has been on the cards for a few of them for a couple of years!!! <A HREF="http://www.eff.org/br">

Hi killer100, Whilst I agree 100% with you that we wouldn't wish any company to go into administration, I felt that Koop's comment related to the way that Amtrak's drivers drove their vehicles. On that point, I also agree with Koop, but I'd say that they weren't all nutters. IMHO, Amtrack did seem to me to have a high % of teararses though, but that might be due to the nature of the parcels game, rather than just the culture at Amtrak. In terms of the sheer number of people affected, it's a very sad day indeed mate. dieseldave
MISSION STATEMENT:- TRYING TO MAKE ADR AS EASY AS ABC FOR EVERYBODY
pmsl i remember on here once when a royal mail van driver signed up on here and told everybody his job and how many jobs he did a day expecting a pat on the back................................................ he didnt last past that post after the abuse he got.
I worked for a franchisee of Amtrak a few years ago, the majority of the delivery drivers are self employed. They get paid per parcel delivered, and were fined if any parcels were returned, usually it was more than they were paid to deliver it. Although I am not condoning their driving habits I can understand that some were nutters on the driving front, but they had a living to earn.
I could never go back to multi-drop parcels again. Long hours and little thanks and way to stressfull for me. My Vodka and coke diet is going rather well,
I've lost 2 days this week.
A few years ago I walked into a firm looking for work. They said they weren't looking for HGV but needed parcel drivers. Now I had done a little bit over the years and it wasn't my cup of tea but for reasons I won't go into I said yes. I found that once I'd cracked my round it was actually quite enjoyable and I certainly wouldn't write it off in the future.
