The last journey of a Legend. Peter Sunter R.I.P

Taken from the local paper

THE funeral of a well-known Northallerton businessman will include a procession of heavy haulage wagons driven by former employees through the town.

Peter Sunter died on Wednesday, January 15, and his funeral will be held at Northallerton’s All Saints’ Church at 2pm on Thursday, January 23.

Mr Sunter was a well-known figure in the town as part of the Sunter Brothers of Northallerton haulage firm, which specialised in carrying large and unusual loads.

At Monday’s Northallerton Town Council meeting, Mayor John Forrest held a minute’s silence for Mr Sunter, and praised the work he had done for the town.

North Yorkshire County Councillor Tony Hall said: “He was a unique Northallerton friend and heavy haulage legend — he will be sadly missed.

“He was a man who quite simply put Northallerton on the national and international maps.”

Dave Murphy, friend and long-time driver, said he has helped organise a procession of Sunter trucks through the High Street.

He said: “There will be a Rotinoff wagon, driven by Peter Clemmet, with Tony Wilbur and Tommy Adams; an Atkinson wagon, driven by David Taylor, with Malcolm Johnson and Terry Thompson; and a Scammell wagon, driven by Colin Boothman, with Peter Clark and Peter Jobling.

“All the men apart from Colin are former Sunter employees. The trucks are being brought up from York, they belong now to Dave Weedon who takes them to shows around the country.”

The Atkinson and Scammell are original Sunter vehicles. The Rotinoff will lead the hearse and family cars, with the Scammell and Atkinson following, and will drive down Thirsk Road at about 1.30pm, the High Street, and to All Saints’ Church for 2pm.

Clair Sunter (daughter) has said " I felt nothing but loss since Dads death…but since the funeral I feel nothing but Pride"

A few from the funeral day

a fitting tribute to a great man in the heavy haulage industry.

LEGEND. Top man R.I.P

They don’t make 'em like that these days. In more than one way. R.I.P.

Hi Adrian,
Doing an article on Peter Sunter, any chance of using one or both of the pictures of him?
Thanks,Mike.

i heard today that the local council charged £300.00 for the road closure for the heavy vehicle tribute, if this is true somebody on that council want’s to take a good long hard look at himself/herself in the mirror and see what a proper t**t look’s like in my opinion.

The pics were taken from a Northallerton Facebook site as far as I know nobody would mind them being used.

It is true the family were charged the fee. It was due to special dispensation allowing heavy vehicles on part of the high street that has a 7.5t limit I was told. There was a petition started but by request of the family the petition ended! They were happy to pay the fee.
Personally I think it’s a disgrace to charge the family of a man that put the Town of Northallerton on the map. :-/
