Right then, thanks to you lot I have now got the bug and ordered myself a model (I have bought one of the fridges off SB139 and ordered a Volvo off ebay This One
And I feel it is going to cost me a small fortune to get all that I may need to get started. I have been this afternoon and bought some basics (a few paints (matt silver, matt white and black gloss in enamel paint is this ok or should I have got the other paints?), different size brushes from thick to tiny (went for the mid price range ones as you get what you pay for dont you?, thinners, some poly cement and a tube of precision poly cement), I already have a very sharp precision knife in my tool box and was wondering if there is anything else I will need before starting to attempt my model when it arrives? I am guessing I will need a few small pots of some more colours (red and orange for the lights and indicators) what other colours will I need at a guess? i intend to do the unit white with a purpleish livery and keep it pretty basic at the moment. Now a few ‘stupid’ questions I take it that it is better to paint it before assembling it, what is the easiest way to do it smallest brush first and work your way up? What do you do if you get too much glue on it? How do you do the number plates and livery? What about the interior? Is it worth giving that a coat of paint before putting it in? Does it look too bad if you don’t? Do you need to put lacquer on the model to get the shine on it or will the paints be ok? The reason I ask all this is the last time I made a model was about 15 years ago and it was mainly planes and tanks and the like and the shiny bits or detail didn’t really matter to me but it does now as I want to make a good job of it. Many thanks for your answers in advance Lee We dont stop playing because we get old, we get old because we stop playing!

the best way to make up the volvo cab is to assemble the cab then paint it its beat to spray it ,then put the glass in from the inside and then slide the interior up into the cab . and you should paint the inside was well as the dash come in sliver so black dash looks better you should have a look at KFS for goodies all the beat with it roll on friday
Giblsa you'll get a few tips from www.gb-scaletrucks.de , or www.ratbags.f9.co.uk or the truck modellers "bible" Truck Model World ,the only magazine devoted to trucks or go onto Yahoo and put in Plastic truck models and you'll get loads of sites (e.g dutch model truck clubs )also, KFS
(Kit Form Services). That'll keeping you in tips and reading for months. Hope that helps a bit.regards derek
all it says on the bottles is "precision poly cement" this one has a long needle (looks like) on it and the other just says " poly cement" and is in a tube with quite a wife opening so I'm guessing that isn't liquid. i have just had a look and the precision is liquid but has a tiny needle opening so shouldn't be too hard to use i guess! or am i wrong? whats the tip on how to use it anyway? might come in handy later on in my "modelling career" We dont stop playing because we get old, we get old because we stop playing!
The one with a needle is the best one to use, if the other is like a toothpaste then I would bin it, thats my oipinion.
Liquid poly is in a bottle with a brush attached to the lid. To use this you hold the 2 parts together and place the brush on the join and the glue then runs down in a capillary action and joins the parts together. If you didn't know this you would probably use the brush to paint it on (thats the best way to describe it). This evaporates so quickly that this can't be done this way. I hope that makes sense?
Hi bugcos, well not all mine ended up as good as that, but i have been making models for 26 years so one would hope you can better youself. Thanks for the comments on my models.Paul
P.S no more drum kits! stop hijacking this thread
i have finally started to build mine and after 3 hours i have put the wheels together and painted them, the engine is built (the basics of it anyway) and the chassis is painted. that is as far as i have got so far as i have man flu and didnt want to do anything that would try my patience.
i will try to get some photos once it is starting to take shape as a wagon (at the minute it looks like the back end of a breakers yard) and you can all laugh at my first attempt! We dont stop playing because we get old, we get old because we stop playing!
Mark is a very good friend of mine and his models are fantastic. Drop him a email if you need info on anything he's helped me out no end Jim
KEEP ON TRUCKING I love volvo f10, 12 flat tops I cut my first teeth on them.
Yes all 1/50 scale
you lads that build these models i take me hat off to you all !!! very smart an the patience u must have scares me !!!
the game is nothing !! the playing is everything !!
Yes the tekno shop/museum is well worth the trip, been 2/3 times now to pick up new release models. The truck stop at lokeren used to stock tekno models ,not sure if they still do as dont get togo by there anymore.
here is my tekno scania 141 code 3 , brought this part complete , and had to do a little re-working here and there .
here is a link to tekno http://www.teknocollector.nl/default.aspx
nice to see the 1/50 stuff lads, i was in lockern truckstop begining of this year and they still had the big glass cabinet on the right by the door with all the models for sale. any of you still driving in europe might be intrested to know that there is a big model truck show on every year at jabekke in belgium, keep on asking the boss if i can weekend over there on the weekend its on but no luck so far. also theres a regular contributer on this forum who organizes a show at gaydon each year. he does a hell of a job in setting it up and i hope to get down there next year, to actually see the work of fellow modellers instead of reading about it in truck model world......
I don't know if it's still there, but, there used to be a really good shop just off the Rotterdam ring that I used to visit in the early 90's.
The Bemo Model Shop in Baexem,Holland is well worth a visit for all you 1/50 scale guys too, they have everything in there and will,at a price, make a one off model of your own truck.A Dutch guy I know had one made of his DAF 95 Space Cab with trailer and it cost him around 300 guilders, which at the time was about £150.It seems a lot,but when you consider that Tekno models at that time used to sell for £75-£125,it ain't bad. http://www.bemobaexem.com I have one that might interest wirralpete,a Scania 143 with silo tank in the colours of H.Freund.
Ok lads can some one please explain, I think I know but just to be sure,
Code 3 is one made up of different models? so whats a code 2? asuming code 1 is a bought complete model, is a code 2 a white metal kit? Banjo Trailers!!!
Well Gentlemen,
I have finally started building my Volvo FH16 and I have been doing it for about 20 hours in total so far and I am quite chuffed with my first attempt at doing anything as technical as this. As I have already explained to the wife, this is just a practice run before I have a go at making my proper model of the truck artic I had my first week of tramping in. That is why it is a little bit rough around the edges in places. It has been quite hard at times and I have run out of patience a few times but it hasn’t been launched across the kitchen yet so I take that as a good sign. Here are some pics for you so you can see my pigs ear!!!!
Any hints and tips would be appreciated (and are definitely needed) We dont stop playing because we get old, we get old because we stop playing!
Just tried the link didnt work so when your browser opens and says not found remove the last ./ and it'll work or try this if i did it right http://www.kitformservices.com Added yep this one works
Gibsa, your model is looking really great, keep up the good work, glad to see you,ve got the table well covered, just don,t try to cut anything on there, craft knives are very very sharp and seem attracted to dining room tables!!!!,I've got the credit card bill to prove it!
There are quite a few truck model clubs on Yahoo, with lots of info and help such as Dutch model truck club (in english) and links on there to lots of other helpful sites such as KFS send them an E=mail if you have a problem,Howard is very helpful,he also builds models featured in Truck Model World. I think if I'd built models instead of researching it all on here I'd have a bigger fleet than 3units and 3 trailers. All the best with your models and keep posting pics of your progress, thanks and regards derek
HI Giblsa, keep up the good work, we all have to start somewhere and anyway i have not built a proper model for 3 years,so i should kick my arse in to gear.Paul
