Talking sense from the driver's seat

Not sure if this has been on or how old it is, (and don’t really care tbh  )
Came across it by chance on you tube, just an ordinary driver with no ‘‘Legend’’ aspiration ■■■■■■■■ :unamused: (well not as far as I know he aint  ) but a guy who talks a lot of sense and relavance about the job.
Check it out.

That guy is always miserable. As anyone would be trunking for John Raymonds Lichfield-Cannock-Lichfield-Cannock all day long.

Irrespective of his style of delivery, miserable or not, he does make some good valid and accurate points, especially around 14 mins in, his point about if you want decent drivers, don’t treat them like sh…

Whether you think the bloke is miserable or not is irrelevant, what he’s saying about the job is absolutely correct it has now become an absolute dead end ■■■■ job, I for one wouldn’t be bothered if I never had any involvement with the crap job ever again in any capacity be it driving or office etc. And let’s face it most of the pricks on the road can’t drive for ■■■■, no manners no respect and most of all no ability.

Speaking as somebody who was fanatically mad keen to get a truck licence many years ago :unamused: , I do fail to see what exactly is the.attraction today exactly.

It is a well known well publicised fact that in order to get a decent figure of money paid, you need to work excessive ridiculous hours, which stops it being actual ‘good money’…but even before you get to that point you can no longer go straight to Class1 anymore, so you need to jump through hoops in stages to the tune of over …3 grand. :open_mouth:

I almost wish it had been like that when I was wanting to start, at least I would have been sensible and prudent enough to be put off it. and more than likely be a lot better off today than what I am.

Totally agree
Thank frec I have not been doing general haulage for the last 12 years or so .
Biding my time with an own account company and hope to retire next year and that day cant come quick enough (oo err)

I’m just pleased that I’ve managed to get a good little number that suits me within my present firm.

Just thinking the other day if I was doing this particular job I do now, but working for the Essex firm I once worked for (who valued and looked after it’s drivers, paid us well, treated us like grown ups, and appreciated the work you did) it would be the absolute perfect job…but unfortunately you can’t have everything.

I really feel left out these days as I seem to be only one who has enjoyed every day and been given a great career by being a professional driver. Hence you won’t find any videos of me whinging

+1 or me ,I’am living the dream as they say :sunglasses: doing what I’ve always wanted to do plus making money and not for anyone else .

I did…

Enjoy it when I first started but it’s changed sooo much now.

I stick with it because it’s all I know how to do and I drive for an own account operator.

I couldn’t go back to general haulage.

I took a bit of a pay cut to come where I am now. As driving jobs go, it suits me. I know others who wouldnt last five minutes at it, but there we go, were all different.
I wouldnt want to go on for one these big companies where you dont have to think for yourself, but are merely a “meat puppet”.
But looking out there, I do wonder what else I would want to do?
Some of it probably is my age, I do remember doing silly hours all over the place, and getting a kick from it. But the world was a different place then, and I was a different person: be sad indeed if I hadnt grown up at all in the past few decades! I would hesitate to recommend this job to anyone today, but then what job would I suggest if asked? This isnt the only job changing.
I think the world is changing with more automation, and there will soon be a change in the social order. Universal Income may well be the way forward. The rich establishment wont be happy about that, but better to go that way than have a violent revolution. This job isnt what it was, but neither is any other.

I do have to agree with Luke, I have been in this career since 1989 as a owner driver, employed driver and on agency and loved it. Sorry Robroy but you do seem to moan for Britain, if you don’t like it change jobs. I am afraid no one owes you a living! As you said before you are a ex haulier so you should know how hard it is to make lorries pay. So come on cheer up and get on with it.

I too am happy in my work.

My most miserable days were on general haulage and tbh i don’t see the attraction at all, once i specialised not only was the work more rewarding financially but also gave far more job satisfaction.

Sorry lads, got a great job, yes of course new box ticking managers come and go but that happens everywhere, we have good equipment, work reasonably short if sometimes odd hours (nature of job), allowed to take a pride, respected and paid well.
No complaints here.

I haven’t watched the video, but if he’s a miserable sod just repeating the same tired ■■■■■■■■ i’ve been hearing for the past 40 odd years from other miserable buggers then i won’t be watching it.
If the jobs bad, go and find another one that isn’t, then look after it so as it lasts forever.

Ok mate,… So have another read of my last post on this, and stop at the bit that says…‘‘I’ve managed to get a good little number that suits me’’. :bulb: .
So why would I change jobs?..and I’m cheered up enough thanks.

I was speaking generally about the crap state of the industry, and agreeing with the guy in the vid who said how the job had deteriorated over the years in terms of pay, and t.s and c.s…rather than ‘‘moaning for England’’ but cheers anyway.

It’s always been hard to make trucks pay, got the t.shirt on that one mate, but that does not necessarily mean that drivers should be treated like kids, aka my main gripe with this job.

(Oh, and thanks for telling me ‘‘nobody owes me a living’’…I’ll write it down so I remember.)

Of course there has been good times in the job for me, I’ve done most aspects of it since 79,.and travelled all over UK and Europe, but that was my point, it ain’t the job it once was.

And the 2020 award for most patronising post goes to…‘Elsa lad.’'. :unamused:

Driver shortage? No doubt it’s like here. Driver shortage is the abridged term, the full title is Shortage of Drivers Prepared to Work for Peanuts.
We’re overrun with Indians, prepared to cut the guts out of the job. They have no idea and drive like they’re still in New Deli. There was one who tried to drive into a tunnel that was lower than the trailer. He stopped at the mouth, thanks to the alarms and flashing lights. The cops arrived to close a lane, to let him reverse to a break in the traffic island, he couldn’t reverse it! Turned out he had no idea how to disconnect the trailer either.

I love my job, flying around Europe in tang spec V8s and working it like it’s still 20 years ago.

I’d probably be a moaning faced git too if I drove a poverty spec shed for some logistics solutions bean counter mob.
