Hi John,

The AEC 8 wheeler was one of several in the fleet of Midway Transport from Golborne, near Wigan.
Midway were part of Hills of Cardiff. In this picture, the AEC is passing through Market Place in the
centre of Wigan, en route from H .J . Heinz factory at Standish to the Heinz factory at Kitt Green.
The Standish factory produced mainly bottled products, Salad Cream, Mayonnaise, Tomato Sauce,
and Vinegar, so it was necessary to continually ship the bottled goods to Kitt Green from where most
of the Heinz products were despatched from. There is a shorter route between the 2 factories, but
it is via a low railway bridge at Gathurst. Another of Hills 8 wheeler covered AEC lorries spent several
years inside the Kitt Green factory, carrying 10 pallets of finished goods from one building to another,
and back for more, each journey of about 500 yards. Old Frank who drove this AEC once said that first
and second gears were a bit worn, but third and fourth were like brand new because he didn’t use them.
