Have you switched the isolator off & counted to 50 ?

This is the first thing our “Volvo Specialist” says, and TBF, it normally works :open_mouth:

Thank you Stanley. I did that and then eventually I switched the isolator for more an hour. It’s still the same. When I parked it everything was fine. Throughout the whole trip there was no any signs of something failing or any faults.

Still having problems? Got any fault codes?

It looks like the shift lever is failing. If I put it in N it won’t pick up gears when I push it to Auto or Manual. Isolated batteries, moved it back and forth started again and it picked up gears. Now I’m not using the N anymore. I’m only using P. So far so good I think the shift lever needs replacement.
There’s no any fault codes showing.

The shift levers can fail, but they normally break physically rather than electrically. Good news is they are easy to change and don’t need programming, just plug a replacement in.
They can be repaired at places like Alliance Electronics or you can buy a new one. You could do with trying another one if possible.
I keep a spare repaired one for this sort of problem.

To replace, flick the side of the shift control off and you will see two torx screws at the bottom. These unscrew and the unit comes away from the seat, you can then get to the plug on the bottom and unplug it.

Thank you very much Coiler. I will definitely do it myself. For sure I will need to try it first before committing.

An I - Shift problem !!! There is hope for ZF lol

The I shift doesn’t seem as good a gearbox as Volvo used to make . In the lifetime I keep the tractor units they would normally have one gearbox repair/refurb, I keep them to about 12 years when they would have covered about 50k over 1m Km.
The older boxes that we had in the F10’s and early FH’s I wouldn’t normally have had any repairs on.

Saying that though my spare unit I’ve had since new which is a 2006 hasn’t had a gearbox repair.

The later gear selectors do seem a lot tougher than the earlier ones.
