Daf xf 105 460 2012/13 - manual or auto?

Looking at lot of these right now around the 8-10k price - most around 700km on the clock - just wondered if anyone would advise for/against picking up a manual one I know a lot of drivers prefer auto now?

aside from the usual ad-blue issues any things to look out for this model/age?

TIA

watch for cab rot around the bottom of the windscreen

Wiring loom behind passenger step causing problems, clutch air pack, header tank splits of pipe outlets at the back crack, calipers stick, discs are complete hub not really worth trying to split them, diesel tanks rot nightheater will fail, wiring on front of starter motor rots, wiper arm mechanisms,as already said they rot across bottom of windscreen and will crack your windscreen you’ll find the rot when you change the wiper arm mechanism.

For my tuppenceworth ,I have been working on DAF for 20 odd years
Brake calipers will stick ,bur they also stick on every other truck and trailer ,so that is a given no matter what vehicle you look at .
The hubs are a pain ,a stupid idea…You can get the bolts out but the time and effort taken can be expensive and as said a new hub is better …There are machine shops who can drill out the old bolts and they do not take long to do it …If doing discs the locking plate for the front and rear are different…One is vented and one is solid ,the vented one can be fitted to the front or rear ,fit the solid one to the wrong axle and it will causing overheating .Have had the odd wiper motor fail ,a pig of a job,but have never seen a wiper linkage fail or be changed ,cab rot below screen is a new one ,I have seen rot on wheelarches ,not on many vehicles but I have seen it …Biggest issue is going to be wiring ,as said passenger side where the cab tilts and flexes the loom and also across the front left to right …Your main issue is going to be you do not know how many repairs and the standard of repair it has had…There where turbo issues and they are well documented …Make sure it has a turbo with the titanium turbine impeller …Other wise if it fails it is expensive …Another issue on older motors is the liners may start to drop which will cause pressuring or even a water leak at the exhaust manifold, again expensive as you need an engineering shot to recut the block if it is indeed able to be recut ,depends how bad it is…So far I have never known any fail that couldn’t be successfully be recut …So engine and wiring are what you need to really be concerned about

Is a 2019 model any better though ?

Good lord… Might be time to call back MAN about that cheap R&M deal they’ve been emailing me about…

Hi Norb,
we run a 57 plate 105/460, but with only 300,000k on it. we get an intermittent warning come up from time to time, usual ‘ding a ling’, plus a picture of a truck on the dash with a lightning bolt symbol, and the message ‘central vehicle controller’

What would that refer to, does not affect performance, does not go into limp mode, and resets itself

I keep getting vehicle controller malfunction on an 18 plate 530 XF. Plug into Davie and dealer doesn’t know what causes it as it has gone out by the time I get to the dealer.

We have just replaced ours with 69 plate XFSSC’s.

One was knackered, as it munched it’s turbo, (Mine, a 61 plate CF 460 auto) and the other was a 12 plate XFSSC auto, with all the lights and horns, and only 660kms on it. It had alloys as well. My boss sold it for £7.5k, and it was immaculate, bordering on obsessiveness.

All our trucks want for nothing. A guy in Scotland bought the 12 plate, came and collected it, and drove it back.

Ken.

Fuses replace, cant remember which number, main power relays the big grey ones are famous for going wrong, when the fault occurs do the lights on the steering wheel switches go out/flicker?

I have a 13 plate and have had it from brand new it has now done 920k been the best motor I have ever had I should be changing it next year for a euro 6 but I just do not won’t to part with it.it has been main dealer maintained from new they have done a great job of looking after it apart from one incident when the fitter over tightened the drain plug on the gearbox and it cracked but they sorted it out and we all have off days.
In all this time I have had a header tank as it split about three years ago I had the turbo changed when it was two to a titium one as advised by Daf they were doing a deal at the time of £500 supplied and fitted, one set of Knox senceors a gear knob as it was leaking air a set of batteries last year as I thought I had better change them for the winter a rear wing last month as the bracket had broken (poor design) a clutch last year as the bearing did not feel as it should and as it was apart we put a new one in a pinion seal last service.they also done something to the synchro on the back of the gearbox in the summer as when it went in for inspection they noticed to much play and advised me to take it easy till it was repaired so I left it there and by next afternoon all fixed.Next service I am having the rear brakes done so they bed in for the mot in feb these I believe are still the original
I am on dock work pulling euroliners with a mixture of weight the max being 25 ton my average mpg is 9.6 this is not what the computer says as that reads higher but worked out by pen and paper I have a 12 speed manual box n mine although I like the spacings of the box it has never been as smooth as the 16 speed box of my last lorry. When or if I change to euro 6 I am not sure what box to have next Daf do not do the 12 speed manual any more all most of my mates say I should move with the times and get an auto as once you get used to it you will never won’t a manual again,I have only ever driven 1 auto for just 5 miles and I did not like that every body says I should get a demo and to be fair the salesman keeps on to me about it but as I carry everything including the kitchen sink I can not be bothered to have one but if I do decide to by another one I will take the demo for a week but deep down I think I will end up with a 16 speed manual as I am too set in my ways hope this helps sorry for the spelling

So I get this 67 plate auto some days - comfortable but deadly slow (gear changes are painfully slow)

I am told the latest big dafs have moved away from zf boxes and are now using someone elses (traxton?) and they are meant to be very fast and very nice to drive?

Traxton is a ZF box !!! ,They have went to EATON for a new 5 speed manual box…Apart from the 5 speed all other boxes are ZF … I don’t know who is feeding you information but they are clueless Tricky

The central vehicle controller fault will need the code read from the VIC ECU

They need to check the VIC for codes ,if they are all inactive with no date time stamps ,get them cleared ,then when it happens again, the code that appears is the issue

My mate runs this XF and there is nothing left of the windscreen surround at the bottom of the screen,
It used to do a lot of mountain crossing before he got it, I can only assume it got plenty of salt washed across the screen
