Chicken feed for some, I know, but seeing as how I was on the dole about 4 months ago…I is a happy chap

Nice one mate.

Shows what a van driver can earn to new drivers. Lol.

I think the forum should be a lot more open about potential $$. Both the good and the bad. It’s spoilt by the low earners thinking anyone who gets more than £2 an hour must be a liar.

Only once drivers start being honest with their overall package - can others decide it it’s for them. My top line last week was about 1400 but I did 6 days and a lot of hours on nights. Zero nights out. I’m a new pass class 1 driver in the midlands. Agency supermarket driver. Before Xmas rush was closer to 1k/week. To get assessment zero experience needed. Won’t say name of xompany but none of the supermarkets require 1 or 2 years here.

That explains why you’re not answering yer phone!

I love being a van driver, I don’t love being a horse carrying washing machines and, the worst things of all, MATTRESSES, upstairs
I put this thread up mainly because I’m feeling a little bit pleased with myself, tbh. It’s been a long time since I could say that my bank account has the plural of “Thousand” in it.
And to kinda say that you CAN earn decent money as a van (■■■■ off ) driver if you put the work in.
I’m 61, 40 years younger than Harry Monk, and if I can earn enough money to keep me in Werthers Originals and hernia trusses then anyone can. Don’t even need a Class 1
I get that Class 1 is easier work than what I’m doing but, you know what? I seem to be doing ok  Lost a stone and a half in 6 weeks too.
I measure my weight against a belt that my little brother and sister got me about 30 years ago. Top quality leather, brass buckle.
When I was at my fighting weight of 12 and a half stone it buckled at the third hole. I got to the point last year when I couldn’t even fasten it on the last hole! Now, i’m at the third hole again, edging towards the 4th. Unseen territory for that belt.

Oi you cheeky coffin-dodger, unlike some I’m still the right side of 60.

P.S. Wouldn’t get out of bed for it.

While I don’t disagree that’s it’s very good for one week what will your average be when you have no work until Thursday this week

Good point.
I’m working the 4 on 4 off rota. As we all know that means nothing, sometimes it’s 1 day off, sometimes 4.
This week it’s 4, so I’m back for Thurs, Fri, and Sat, I lose 1 payable day.
Guaranteed 11 hours but I usually do at least 12 so…
£14.34 x 12 x 3 = £516 top line. Not great, I know, but better than 73 quid on the dole

And, I only got that much last week because I did 5 days instead of four, plus some extra OT on the other days. total of 15 payable OT hours.

I posted it because I was chuffed to ■■■■ about making some decent money after 30 years as a poor working musician and, after 7 weeks in the job, I have over 2k in the bank even AFTER paying 1.5k in rent and living exes.
I’m still smiling

I wasn’t trying to put you down or anything and you didn’t need to explain. Me being a lazy thing would be happy with 3 days @£516.

You should be chuffed it’s always good to start earning and then saving

No no mac12, I didn’t think that at all mate. Just clarifying stuff

Mythbuster…

I passed classs 2 in January and never struggled.

And have been asked to sign into Rota with guaranteed shifts until april. I’ll be on my holidays still then - but if not I’d still have the same amount of work.

Nice !

I was on 7.5 Ton vans last week at Royal Mail via Manpower Agency
£900 for 44 paid working hours (Plus 5 hours deducted for breaks) over 5 nights before tax - Inside the M25 admittedly

I don’t expect those kind of weeks post-Christmas :frowning:

Excellent!
Inside M25 too, John Lewis 7.5s, gotta love Central London. Was gridlocked for over an hour on Bloomsbury Place, near the Museums, the other day. Kept saying the mantra “Hourly Paid, Hourly Paid”, then me porter carried a small box 100m to the drop just around the corner and came back with a 10 quid tip

You guys get tips !?

I can’t stand Central London daytime… Especially around the Mount Pleasant area, the traffic and car drivers seem to go all crazy and the cyclists become suicidal :open_mouth: - Nights aren’t soooo bad as long as the bridges are open.
There was a John Lewis driver on his holiday, temping at RM for the last 2 weeks… I wonder how many other drivers take their holidays in the run up to Christmas to pick up higher paying temp work ?

There are jobs on the river Thames that pay over £60k just for working 26 weeks per year and there are better paying jobs available.

Yep, tips
Best day was 35 quid. Average mebbe 20 quid a week normally.

Central London it’s not the cyclists who I dislike most, it’s the effin pedestrians. Darting out into the road as if they’ll just bounce off you, idiots. Although cyclists come a close second. Cars? well, it’s taken for granted they’ve got a deathwish.

What jobs are those, raymundo? Sounds interesting.

Not driving trucks but driving tugs towing barges and bit of a specialised job. River traffic after so many years in decline is now actively being encouraged. I can do 500 ton a day into Deptford on a good day so must be getting a few trucks off the road … where they are least needed !!

What kind of training/licences are required for something like that?
Is it anything like Pilot boat training - Always wondered how that worked too

I generally stick to “Greater” London - I try to keep south of the river and out of Central London if I can help it.

Was having a quick peak of this thread. New and trying to get head around things.

Noticed your comment about that, is it common for 4 on 4 off jobs not to have fixed regular work?

He is agency. If you were full time employed you would have fixed regular work.

Personally more interested in the 60k barge job how do I get one of them
