Why do the job?

In lots of posts I read about poor pay, long hours, idiot TM’s etc. etc. etc. so what is it that still drives (excuse the pun!) to choose this profession if we know what is in store for us?? intrigued to hear your thoughts.

1, Too thick or lazy to do anything else!
2, Poor personal hygiene, so prefer to work alone!
3, Miserable git who hates people and life!

Take your pick pal!

One of the best paid jobs I’ve ever done and had and I’ve done a few.

I’m not lazy but I do enjoy being paid to be a steering wheel attendant while getting to relax at RDCs.

Can be lonely when you’ve worked two man crews before. I miss the banter more then anything.

It’s an easy job.

Sorted! :sunglasses:

there’s plenty to moan about in this industry, but there’s plenty of good things about it too.i try to avoid the moaners in our yard.
tomorrow i’m off to the IOW,at time-and-a-half,listening to the radio and enjoying the scenery :sunglasses:
what’s not to like?

Where else in 2017 Britain can ordinary working class bods take home £500/600 per week and get their beer and food paid for (assuming they spend their subsistence) if they stop out.

Its ■■■■ easy in all honesty, once out on the road no buggers peering over your shoulder, if you accept a job with in cab camera that’s different but no one is forcing anyone to work there, all you have to do for the majority of lorry jobs is select D press the loud pedal and follow the directions of auntie sat nav.
Unless you choose one of the specialist jobs you’re out of the weather in a warm air conditioned cab, you can listen to whatever music or chat show you want on the wireless, just slipped that in to feed Evil a good line :smiling_imp:

There are better paid lorry jobs out there, but getting mucky and having to use some nous usually comes into it, and/or some hard graft and/or unusual hours can make a difference to lowering the hours whilst upping the pay.

It’s not all £9 an hour plus an extra £1 an hour for every hour over 60, or a whole extra £1 if you go umbrella :unamused: , some jobs are seriously well paid and it’s up to each driver to go find these places.

There’s something for everyone in transport world, all you have to do is find the niche you want then search out your route into it.

P.S. Not sure about 500-600 take home mate, probably more a gross figure in my area unless you’re doing 2 weeks work in one…

To be fair Evil, i suppose i come from the previous generation (or maybe the bugger before cos i was old fashioned as a youngster :open_mouth: and seriously out of time now  ), where the man (usually but not always) went out to work and the wife often stayed at home and raised the family.
I know the nuclear family has come in for ridicule from the feminazis the hip media and other assorted people with problems and useful idiots over the years, but, like Christian ideals not necessarily involving religion, it wasn’t a bad way to guide your life.

Unfortunately the only way the average working bloke could make that happen was by earning serious money, hence the two weeks worth of work every week became the norm.
Basically why i followed the route i did throughout my driving years, always followed the money.

In many ways i’m glad people don’t usually have to do that any more, but whilst you are young, and if you’re careful with how you spend the extra, ie shovelling as much as possible against the mortgage to get that paid off early, then i think its still a valid work ethic, if for no other reason that if you don’t ■■■■ it up the wall then once you have your house paid for and have no debts they, the govt, employers etc, no one has got you by the ■■■■■■■■, the day that last payment goes to the building society is a very good day indeed :sunglasses:

All these complaints you hear, are no different from any profession.
The pay isn’t enough, the hours don’t suit, the gaffer tells you how to live your life etc. If you can tell me one job, as an employee, that people don’t complain about , I’ll hang up my keys tomorrow.

There are very few jobs that offer the illusion of freedom that driving does. For example in my job , I get told what load to load from point A and told to drop it at point B. I can choose the route (within reason), I don’t hear anything from anyone whilst travelling and then I give them a call for the next job. That’s what appeals to me. The ability to do the job my way, without 1000 questions as to why.

Well I’ve been dabbling on agency & have landed myself a full time job direct.
I don’t have any skills - I’m 34 have a 3 year old & a 4 month old daughters. A wife that spends money faster than I make it. Oh and a big mortgage to boot.

This is the best paid job I’ve had. Worked in a factory, worked in an airport for 17 years before being made redundant. Getting up at silly o clock & working crazy shifts.

I just drop building supplies off which is Monday to Friday 8-4 or sometimes 5. 3 - 4 drops in my local area.

No two days the same.

I’m back early enough to see my girls & im bring home over £500 a week.
Easiest money I’ve earned.

Oh & I enjoy seeing cool stuff you wouldn’t see stuck in a factory screwing lids on pots.

Scope and variety. Stay in the industry long enough and you’ll get opportunities to drive so many different types of vehicles. Opportunities to work away or work locally. Consider all the peripheral occupations, from working in the traffic office, garage, warehousing, management, training. I’m fortunate enough to have done a bit of most of these but found my niche in training. It wouldn’t suit everyone but I only mention it because there’s a lot more to the industry than driving alone - much as I thoroughly enjoyed that as well.

The scope of the industry is huge and there’s something for the majority of folks.

Are you saying that you do 40-45 hrs per week Mon-Fri days for over £13 per hour?

Personally speaking, i could no longer bear hearing the neighbour bang my missus at all hours in the morning as i was made to sleep on couch and told i was not a man!! So made perfect sense i got a dead end, thankless job that has me doing 90 plus hours a week at minimum wage!

So your misses is shagging your neighbour, and making you listen to it (you’re not allowed to watch, as your whacking one off puts your neighbour off his stroke). And I response to that, you get a thankless, 90 hour job? Why? Why increase your agony? Why not do as I did? Get a job, driving a truck 3 and a half days a week. Less than 12 hours a day.

Some of us actually enjoy the job, the driving , the communication with people, going different places , it’s a way of life!! , you can get some awkward bods where you tip or load , but you’re soon on your way again

Being paid to see parts of the country you may never ever see…

Many possibly, only see home - the factory, and the airport for the usual holiday abroad
