tanker companies

Chris Webb:
Wasn’t there somebody called Townend from Oldham knocking around in the70’s?Seem to recall seeing them in ICI at Heysham and one of their drivers telling me they did a Stirling trunk or a delivery to Stirling from Heysham and return which seemed a lot of work inthose days.Think they were red units and plain stainless tanks with company logo on back end. Also anybody remember Carless Capel and Leonard whose main depot was Harwich but had a tank farm at Longport,S on Trent.

I think you mean Townson Tankers from Oldham who did a lot of work for ICI Thornton Clevelys. They also had a contract with Esso in Trafford Park and Weaste.

Townson sold out to Sadler on the Q8 fuel contract who were in turn taken over by Stiller. I worked for the son Roger who ran Woodbrow Bulk Liquids until his death.

Carless Petroleum is still operating and the haulage is provided by Sammy Jones (Hargreaves)
