Ackworth / Onward Transport.

Remember when going scotch (if from the south), or going down to the smoke (if from the north), was long distance?
When Middle East work was readily available?.
When driving a 111 or F89 meant you were truly the king of the road?
Recall those companies long gone, where every day was an adventure?

What ever happened to those drivers you spent hours with.. where did they go? and recollect on those characters in the industry sadly no longer with us.
This forum is for us all to indulge in a little nostalgia and remember with rose coloured glasses how much better it was in the olden days

Andy, I sold the motor at the end of Feb. work was quite bad at the time so I had a decision to make. I had a very good offer for the motor and although I wasn't 65 until July I decided to get out. I did a bit holiday relief, then got the chance of a full time job so I took it, finding any job in this area is difficult so I think I was quite lucky as my age (over 45    :D :D ) was against me.
Simpsons did sell out a while ago and I did hear that Peter Simpson was working for Elddis, as far as I know the depot is only leased to the new owners. I did do one shift on agency a while back and the motor was a disgrace, a fact PS will not be happy with as his name is still on the door.

Aye up kev your right about PS he was a funny bloke at times but the tackle was always turned out nice even when i worked for him all i can say is he must have been in a real pickle to sell the firm because he was very focused on most things to let it slip like that.
Time is flying kev been to my dads today its is birthday today 68 the old sod still as you remember him all he does is fish and make stuff in his garage but he is happy buy the way we put dinner inside the yorkies so the gravy doesnt run out onto the table HA HA

Andy, wish Derek all the best from me, sounds like he is enjoying retirement. I think Peter Simpson sold out because of all the hassle, new rules and the reccession, like most of us when we get a bit older we finally think it's no longer worth the trouble. Three years ago I never even thought about selling up in fact I was planning on buying a new tractor. Then the reccession really bit me in the arse, luckily I had not saddled myself with any debt so I just puddled along and kept going. With classic 20/20 hindsight I should have got out then and found a job. Regards Kev.

Andy, Iain worked in the office at Birtley, he never had enough work of his own so he was always in the yard doing everyone else's job!!  Ps it took me YEARS to get him to tie a proper dolly   (also his sheeting was good for a laugh for quite a while) . Iain youve made a cracking job of 370. Regards Kev.

This is taken at senior greens at caldervale road in wakefield the man on the right is Tony Thorpe he showed me this photo a few years ago he was trailer mate for the other in the pic is name is Deal cant remember is first name is son also work at Ackworth i think Bob Deal he was a fitter and was as mad as box of frogs last time i heard he was working for Hill Hire at Euroway Bradford.
As it turns out the buildings in the background were rented to Ack/Onward in the 80s for warehouseing small world.

These have been borrowed from the Onward Holdings web site the driver of wagon being waved off is i think a old hand called Cyril Key iam told he was one off the first to go over the water i dont know if he is still kicking about i worked with Cyril when i first started at the firm he was a nice bloke.
He once told me that years ago one of the other drivers was messing about and left the handbrake off another unit and it ran into his putting a dent in the front panel, then when i found this pic there is the dint the other driver was a bloke called Kenny Beckett another old hand that was a pioneer of this industry funny tho he was potty as well :D :D :D

This was my old girl, we bought it in 1990 from warner of wingate ex Onward. It was immaculate and faultless when we bought her, an original flatbed, i operated and drove her for 10.5 years all over the uk. i put a piston in and a new water pump and that was about it, then after 6 year i put a 2700ati engine in her and she was a flyer. Just after we bought her my father phoned Ackworth and asked if they minded if we kept the colours and they no problem and even gave us the paint code,Happy memories,Steve.

Hello Big AW, aye she was perfect when we got her, after i sold her i had another 2100 same spec which i had for 3 yr never let me down, then a big 4000 foden six wheel flat and now a Scania six wheel flat, all were and are lovely motors but i must admit the ex Onward ( Lady A) was my favourite, you could have the bunks set up as two bunks and was great for stowing the weeks gear. As i said i drove her for 10.5 yr and always got back home, no abs etc and as she had been so well maintained by Onwards she lasted to the grand old age of 17. another thing was the body was ali and wood and was perfect in everyway very well built. As i said very happy days.

Found a few more pics
This unit and trl was painted for a at the time new company New york seltzer it was going to be the next big thing but never was it was driven by Mick Barker one of the most genuine blokes you could meet went to work at BOC Transhield when they took us over i think he as retired now.
This one was taken at South Kirkby depot for a newsletter i think because they never loaded flats there it was at the old United Transport Distribution depot that Onward Transport took over in thre late 80.s
The two ERFs are i think were the first one that ackworth trans bought and at the time the newest and i seem to remember it was the hundreth bought i was told the driver that had it from new Des smith that he got all the best back loads out of Scotland so the lorry could make money.
