Car driving hours

Sorry for the non-truck related post but I would like to know if car driving comes under the scope of any laws relating to number of hours per day driven? To put it another way do they fall into domestic driving rules or do these regulations only apply to goods vehicles?

UK Domestic rules apply to Goods Vehicles which do not come under the scope of the EC Rules. There are no limits to the amount of hours for car drivers, although if an accident was caused by a car driver who had driven for an excessive number of hours that could be taken into consideration by the courts. The bloke who caused that rail crash with his Land Rover had the fact he hadn’t had much sleep taken into account although there is no requirement for a ‘daily rest period’ for car drivers. In fact there is no sleep requirement in any of the regulations, only rest.

There was also a case involving an accident on the A11, near Elveden, the guy was something to do with sound equipment & had been working long hours & then driving.
I think he got a prison sentance.

Car driving hours, as an employee are primarily subject to Road Traffic law, Reckless/Careless Driving should anything go wrong, but in Sept 2003 the HSE issued a booklet called Driving at Work which essentially places an onus upon each employer to consider the safety of any employee who drives, rides, or evens cycles, in the course of their employment.
