Lusk:
Is there no derogation because the driver is using the truck as a means to an end?

No I’m afraid not.

There is an exemption from the DCPC for people who only use a HGV vehicle to transport goods used in the course of their trade, perhaps that’s what you’re thinking of.

Lusk:
When the “driver” gets to his destination and commences work, how should he deal with tacho inputs: i.e dealing with mode changes? You can rest assured that when he is half way through hanging a door or something, he has to trot back to the vehicle and change the mode?

If the vehicle will close to where the work is being done the tachograph should be used as normal, i.e. changed from other work to break when you have a break.

If the driver will be working a distance from the vehicle so it’s not practical to use the tachograph I would take the card out and do a manual entry when I returned to the vehicle.
