Just some general info

Hi all,

The main place to work over seas looks to me to be Canada. So…

Would it be possible through a Canadian Company to actually up sticks bring my wife and 2 kids to Canada and start work Or are they looking for more of the single type?

Being away for a few weeks at a time is no problem as we are used to that with my previous jobs

Just wondering really very curious

Thanks in advance
Dave

I don’t live in Canada, I live in the USA but know many British drivers who have moved over using some recognized government scheme, I have also seen many pack up and go home to the UK because the application for residency had been revoked, in some cases it was because the company that had promised them the new life had let them down and used them for a year or so. Be very careful and wait for a response from some of the others who have been successful.

It’s not a good time to be considering this right now, imported drivers are rare at the moment due to immigration reducing access to companies and also with the current economic strains too. Although I came here with my wife and son in 2013, my personal view is if you get the chance to move over with the family bring a big chunk of money with you. If you’re not able to do that then you may have to consider leaving them behind for a while which could be up to 18 months or a year while you get set up properly

OK thanks both . I’ll put this idea to bed and perhaps revisit in some years time. As a family we have no real ties here in the UK just ourselves to keep happy.

Up rooting your family to lands new is a huge move though so of course would not be taken lightly

I’ve been away from them before for long stints while I served in the forces but came out for this reason. I/we could live with me not being around for a few weeks at a time but I think I would bring strung up if I told them daddy’s going away for few years haha

Perhaps I move within europe would be easier… but I cannot help think the pay wouldn’t be as good as the UK

Actually now is a good time to come to Canada, contrary to popular belief there are still companies hiring overseas workers. I know of three in Manitoba, two are offering LMIA and one is direct onto the PNP scheme.

There are some about without a doubt but nowhere near as many as when we came here

They may be thin on the ground, but if you want to get to Canada you only need one! The firms I know of are all quite reputable too, so it’s not the impossible situation that some would have us believe it is.

I think you’re right, there are certainly a lot less companies that meet the qualifications for getting Lmo’s, but they are available , although in shorter supply than they were. I reckon the companies that are getting them are probably the better ones to work for anyway, and now that the revolving door of European drivers coming over has slowed dramatically hopefully those getting hired will be treated as respected employees not just meat in the seat.
The job hasn’t changed though, and the poorly prepared or unrealistic are still going to have a rude awakening!

For sure, Canada can be very good to you if you learn how to play the game, but it can also hurt you if you are not prepared to change your thinking to suit how things are done here.

If you have a desire to live here then go for it, but if it’s just a way of getting out of Britain then you may be better off staying put.

12 days and not one comment or PM, seems that people are not as keen to come to Canada as they say they are.

Maybe you can help MartyG in the post below, he’s looking in your neck of the woods.

Hi Mark, hope things still going well for you over there. Have you got your third truck yet? I think that if the vote goes the wrong way on 23rd June then there may well be a big rush to get out of the UK…me being one of them!! :open_mouth:
Canada would be the obvious choice as its the only country that is predominantly English speaking, seems to share the same common values as the UK and you can still get in! Australia, NZ and The States are all no entries.

this is strange, i know of one company that used the pnp scheme, or at least did it last year, i don’t think the doing it anymore, i dont know if i can write down the name, according to forum policies, their name is the same as the animal on all MB documents,
beside them there is any other that uses the MPNP system?

and the other ones with the aviable lmia’s where do they advetrise? i chacking kijiji an a daily basis, beside self nominated immigration “experts” that for a lot of money promising everything from LMIA to PR.
one of this lads contacted me and explained to me the payments, i almost recieved a heart atack, 15,000 cad. but the good news is that he can make instalments, well thank you but no thank you.

There’s nothing an immigration ‘expert’ can do that you can’t do yourself, cost me $150 to get a work permit as opposed to $5000 with a so called expert doing things for me

It is 100% Illegal for any company to charge you for them finding you a job, if that is what they are saying, the company has to pay if they employ an Immigration company to deal with paperwork, TWP’s, LMIA’s etc.

I think big-al is referring to the immigration “specialists” that are nothing more than parasites who fill out a form on your behalf and charge the earth for it, they have a ton of clauses in the contracts you sign so you have no comeback if your application is refused.

Some companies do use an immigration service, Bison being a good example, but they only do what somebody at Bison would be doing if it was done in house. When I came here with Big Fright, they had a department that did all that stuff in house, it’s the same thing, just subbed out.

Yep, most of them are parasites, unless someone has a difficult case, like health problems or criminal convictions, there is no need to use them.
I met a driver in Calgary YYC a few years ago that had paid $12,000 to one of the most well known Imm companies and he had been left stranded there, never did know what happened to him.
And another one from Edmonton on a FB page I am on had paid an Imm agent an unbelievable $45,000 to keep him here after his LMIA ran out and in the end he still had to go back to the UK.
Up until a few years ago, Bison were charging the Imm fees back to the driver.

that is corect Newmercman, i talking about the parasites, or “finger poiters” that for a big money will tell you where there is an LMIA and who is hiring. not the paper pushers one, thay actualy do some job, useles but still a job.

i had one of this parasites calling me to explain to me that there is a job opening in NB, and for the “small” amount f 5000 cad, he would be more than happy to send me to them, no promisess no nothing, by mistake he sliped his tonge and told me the name of the company, i called them, thay told me that the last time they had LMIA was february 2015, and they are no longer going to use this system…

for some reason they all based in BC or AB. and this was the chepest one, other wanted 15,000 cad… for this info, and keep sending me SMS until i blocked his phone. trying to convince me that this is a great deal.

you are 100% right, this is the law, but the problem is that there is a huge industry thats geting bigger and bigger by the day, a lot of companies dont want to do all the paper work and prefer to out-source it to this head hunters, the money is big, so no one complain about it.
the problem started with the reform of the TFW program that hurt the trucking companies, but it wasnt the intention, the reform sopoused to be with the low class jobs, that abused the system, not to sound racist, but walk in to any Tim hortons or a gas station in GTA, who works there? and how is their english? they recieved their PR and sponsor thier all family including the grandmother to arive, after that they dont want to work and collect walfare, i have spoke to so many employers and recruitors that are really frustrated about the situation, but as a Canadians they dont have the you know what to do somthing about it. they just cry to a enthusiast news reporter that write down an article and that is it. if the trucking companies really wanted to change things they could go on strike, if the big companies like bison, h&r chalanger and more would keep the trucks in the yard then the knuckleheads in ottawa will change things but until they grow a pair they acting like litle girls, cry complain and move on.

As someone who was a union rep for a good few years I can tell you that a strike benefits nobody but the very people you are protesting against and achieves very little or nothing in the end. I have to disagree with your outlook on ’ big companies’ too to be honest. If they’d concentrated on retention instead of boosting profit in the first place then the majority of them wouldn’t now need the LMIA system to rely on for a workforce.
