Surley the company are in breach of health and safety and corporate manslaughter should have been an option. That is if the companies policy is for the trainer to stand in front of trainees when executing a E stop.
Also they should have been Monitoring such dangerous practice, no matter what .
I wonder how long he had been getting away with this “Russian roulette”
It is not standard procedure at all the instructor should have been in the cab with the trainee,
You might even find that Qualitas did not have permission to use the truckstop where as other companies did and paid for it.
I must say that 2 instructors from J Coates deserve a mention Syd and Jeremy who where first on the scene and tried there best to comfort and administer first aid to Alan whilst waiting for the emergency services to come. Thety did a great job under the circumstances well done
if thats a christopher reeves themed link then thats so wrong, if its not, then i’m so wrong for thinking it was. When I was training with qualitas/sterling in northmpton our instructor told us the guy got ran over on the reverse…
I think he was implying that you don’t stand infront of an 18ton truck driving towards you at 30mph unless you’re superman. No deeper meaning than that, looking too hard.
I read this story in the newspaper and my first thought was how can someone claim to be an instructor when he is not even in the vehicle with the pupil? or at least walking alongside giving advice
I noticed the instructors wife asked a similar question.
So now someone says he got killed by a reverse exersise. So we have lies.
Who by? Have Qualitas got away with a corperate manslaugter charge on a technical reason?
This sorry episode must have gone before the H&S executive.
It beggers belief that this practice was either ignored or the risk assessment was not investigated and quantified by Qualitas themselves.
I reckon justice has not been done. If I was the familty member of the deceased I would have grave concerns about an accident verdict.
I would go as far to say this was a clear breach of H&ESand therefore needs further investigation by those who set the standards for trainers welfare and their paramount safety when involved with such exersises.

have a read it will tell you what happened a bit more the the sun
all i can say on this is what i was told whilst doing my training with the company that the guy worked for. I’m not stirring anything up or wishing to cause issues just telling you guys what alans old colleague told us, don’t know why we were told that when obviously from the hearing the guy was killed during the emergency stop procedure. But there we go

There has got to be somthing wrong here either:
1, The instructors at Qualitas have been told to cover it up?
2, I would have thought that all their instructors would have been reminded of the safe and correct procedures that they have in place to prevent this accident happening, so if this was the case all current and new instructors would be informed.
I suppose we are talking about Qualitas / Stirling
after looking at the mail site, i will just throw in that yup you’re right its not eighteen tonners they use, its little piddly ten/twelve ones, and also I learnt in one of those eurocargo It Vibrates Everything Comes Off trucks, and after the first day of training when I wore saftey boots, I had to drive the rest of the week in trainers as the pedals were too close together for my big fat feet to only press one of them down, when I braked i’d be catching the accelerator too and the thing would go mad.

And you probably drove better in trainers…
And yes you are correct they use Small Lgv Trucks which makes it easier for people to pass the test in a 3 day course and test…
I would just like to say that i passed my training and alan was my instructor,he was a smashing fella and good at his job,and when we practiced our emergency stops at no time did he stand in front of the lorry
condolences to his family

So what was he doing standing in front of the truck that day?
With you then, he was not following standard Qualitas procedure
“A spokesman for Qualitas, said Alan was ‘following standard procedure’ when he performed the emergency stop.”
