Medical and eyesight

So I’m a bit nervous here. 42 and a couple of weeks ago I had a free eye test with the result I need glasses for short sightedness. Not extreme as far as I could make out.

Now this thread the chap says he failed the medical on his eyesight, can’t he wear glasses etc.

What’s the deal, I should be ok with my glasses?

I’ve worn glasses since I was 9 years old. (No need to mention how many years that is!). Many drivers wear specs. Just make sure you’ve got your prescription with you when you go for medical.

Same here, worn them since I was five. Not as long as Pete [emoji2]. Passed medical with them. Took driving tests with them.

Get another eye test. Often they get it wrong, especially as you’re saying you don’t need much correction. Besides, the HGV medical involves having an eye test. Can you read a car number plate from 20 metres?

Lorry and bus drivers
You must have a visual acuity at least 0.8 (6/7.5) measured on the Snellen scale in your best eye and at least 0.1 (6/60) on the Snellen scale in the other eye.

You can reach this standard using glasses with a corrective power not more than (+) 8 dioptres, or with contact lenses. There’s no specific limit for the corrective power of contact lenses.

You must have a horizontal visual field of at least 160 degrees, the extension should be at least 70 degrees left and right and 30 degrees up and down. No defects should be present within a radius of the central 30 degrees.

You must tell DVLA if you’ve got any problem with your eyesight that affects either eye.

You may still be able to renew your lorry or bus licence if you can’t meet these standards but held your licence before 1 January 1997.

The practical driving test eyesight test
At the start of your practical driving test you have to correctly read a number plate on a parked vehicle.

If you can’t, you’ll fail your driving test and the test won’t continue. DVLA will be told and your licence will be revoked.

When you reapply for your driving licence, DVLA will ask you to have an eyesight test with DVSA. This will be at a driving test centre. If you’re successful, you’ll still have to pass the DVSA standard eyesight test at your next practical driving test.

This only applies to cars and motorbikes. Vocational tests rely on the medical report, so NO eyesight test is involved at the time of the driving test for trucks and buses.

You’ll be fine, might get a 01 code on your license like I did

I was worried about my eyes too. I went to Vision Express I must say the optometrist was really knowledgeable regarding the LGV D4 requirements. She filled out the optical section at no extra cost and assured me I will be more than fine for the medical assessment. Remeber it is the DVLA who decide the result of the D4 not the GP or Optometrist.

What is the bare minimum for an HGV driver to Pass his eye test?

I wont get the optician to fill mine in anymore , they get far too involved, best place is your backstreet medical place for 50 quid, doctor asked me to read the letters on the charts while she had her back to me :open_mouth: needless to say i passed and my glasses stayed in my pocket, unless you really have issues with sight then i wouldnt let an optrician anywhere near a D4 (or whatever it is)

If you can’t there are a lot of truck drivers who are being taken off the road, me included. Suspect that was someone outside the eyesight requirements or wearing milkbottle lenses.

Your eyesight has to be pretty extremely off if you arent going to pass the medical. Bring slightly short sighted really isn’t going to affect you.

Some docs can do the eyesight tests else you need to get the details filled in by an optician on the D4 form. Many do it for free if you do it at time of eyetest at least in the highstreet.

Only thing is, if you need glasses wear them as you dont want to get involved in a crash and they find out you need them or have the 01 on your licence.
