I really wan't to follow my dream... but!

Hi everyone!

My name is Matt and first of all thanks for having me on this awesome forum

My dream from as far back as I can remember (36 now) is to be a truck driver! For the last 5 years I have played Euro Truck Simulator 2 daily to give you an idea but anyways ill get to the point.

in my distant past I had quite a few mental health issues and was prescribed;

Temazapam 20mg daily << Sleeping tablets
quetiapine although never took it >> antipsychotic given to me at the time for really low moods
Mirtazapine 45mg >> Antidepressants
Dihydrocodeine 90mg slow release >> Pain killer
Allopurinol 200mg daily >> for gout

I also have a diagnosis of Asperger Syndrome and last year got diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
I am prescribed Metformin 500mg twice a day for that.

I have stopped taking Dyhdrocodiene and Temezapam and never taken my Quetiapine but there still on my Prescription for the time being Ive been prescribed these meds for years. Temazapam for nearly 20! Once I read that there maybe a chance I could do it I gave up all medication, except Mirtazapine, allopurinol and metformin.

Once I got my diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes I gave up on the idea of ever becoming a truck driver but have read that its not to big of an issue if not on insulin and i am not.

I am just wondering if anyone can tell me if with my previous mental issues and Aspergers I may never get a license for HGV , I have not been under any mental health treatment for years now and soon i will take the meds of repeat.

I have a standard car license passed 14 years ago with no penalties or restrictions, have not mentioned diabetes to DVLA not sure if its an issue for car driving.

I have no idea whats asked in a medical or what chances I would have of getting my provisional ticket.

Sorry its a long winded post but I don’t know any truck drivers to ask and I really appreciate any input you guys can give
Thanks very much
Matthew

Hi Matt. I have schizophrenia and I’m on a ZBload of medication, I’ve been a class 1 driver for a few years and was class 2 for 15 before that.

Of course, I don’t tell employers that

Sorry to hear about your condition buddy, cannot be easy…

That’s fantastic that your able to work and enjoy driving! Class 1 :stuck_out_tongue: that would be living the dream!

I just don’t know what to do for the best, obviously sleeping tabs are a no no but there still on my script so not sure if the medical ppl or DVLA contact the GP i assume they do?

Thanks for getting back to me buddy, i really appreciate it

Can’t give specifics on those meds, although non of them appear on the lists I’ve found, but it’s quite possible you could drive an HGV on them. What will likely happen is when you apply for the licence and do the medical, the forms will have to go off to a DVLA doctor panel who’ll look at what you’re taking and might ask for extra information from your GP / specialists to confirm that you’re safe to drive.

Can take a bit of extra time to get the provisional, but it is surprising what they’ll let you drive on as long as you’re stable - that seems to be the key from everything posted here in the past. Scary thing is the number of people who should be taking meds and aren’t!

next thing to do maybe to ring my GP and book an app and get taken off my meds officially so that when I have my medical im in the best place possible

Thanks again bud, ill hopefully be a real trucker one day and not just sat in front of my pc

Hi Matthew
Welcome and if your making a GP appointment ask him what your planning to do and wanting to book a medical, ask him will your meds on your prescription stop you getting the medical passed if not ask him what your safe to drop to get it done and good luck.

Jeff.

Nah, it’s old junk really. The kids left home, and all my symptoms cleared up. Weird! I’m still on the meds, cos… well, truthfully, cos I like em

Good call on not taking the seroquel, that is seriously nasty stuff to get off.

Whether you get yourself off the meds officially is your call. They will still find out you were on them, and it will go to the panel. I was on 40mg temazepam a night when I got my provisional, so I doubt you will have any problems. I’m on zolpidem now (which is 100x worse)

If it’s your dream, go for it pal! I think you’ll be fine.

Thanks buddy I appreciate it

One thing that hasn´t been said here is that if you book a medical with your GP it will probably cost you 2 or 3 times a much than if you did a bit of research into other sources of medical. There´s even Docs that will come to your house, if you want, and probably STILL be cheaper than your GP.
Do a bit of googling. And…hello

Iirc the criteria is: 3 months stable to drive a car, 3 years stable to drive a hgv.

It’s down to your doctor (usually your shrink) what they consider stable.

My shrink thinks it’s a good thing for me to be in work, so has been very supportive

That’s a lot of drugs to be taking.

I know F all about it but I’d advise to try and ween yourself off them.
Drugs for psychological disorders very often lead to a reliance on the drug.

I may be taking a stag in the dark but sleeping issues + depression + pain in certain areas i.e back/hips/legs etc… + gout + diabetes.
To me it sounds like you could potentially be overweight. If that’s the case maybe the first thing to do would be to lose the weight and see how that improves things.

Thanks very much for all your replys guys! Means a lot

Im defo going to do some more research and see what happens as far as dreams go its not the most unachievable so with enough enthusiasm I’m sure it’s possible

Also do a bit of research on the job itself. It’s a million miles away from a PC game & isn’t everyone’s cup of tea…

What he said, my job is multi drop in a rigid and the long drives are pretty â– â– â– â– â– â– â–  boring so much so last night I said to a mate I might have reconsidered if I knew how boring it can be especially when starting at 3/4am, although I do enjoy my job.

I take Mirtazepine 30mg nightly as I have had depression/insomnia in the past, have been free of it ever since I started on it so doctor decided to let me keep on taking it. Paid the extra to have my medical with my own doctor who knows all my history and he just wrote a letter explaining the situation, had no problem with the DVLA and license was back in a couple of weeks.

With your medical history being as it is, I would second the advice you have been given and have the medical with your own doctor. It’s worth the cost, all the hassle it saves you down the line.

I said to you in a pm that the job is very different to the game. You can’t replicate that feeling of dread you get when you first have to put an artic on a bay by yourself with an audience. That being, it does get easier!

‘I know F all about it but I’m going to contradict what your highly trained doctor thinks is best anyway…’ :unamused:

Try being a supermarket delivery driver first. This should also help your fitness as it’s hard work, but at least most are part-time hours. The vans are all less than 3.5 tonnes gross weight so can be driven on a car licence and there are no tachographs fitted.

I probably know a lot about psych meds after studying them on a personal level for 30 years. I wouldn’t recommend coming off them without talking to your doc first. That being said, if the op has took it upon himself to ditch them by himself, the least I would recommend is to speak to your pdoc and tell him, it will all go in your favour with the dvla. Oh btw, bad bad boy stopping the temazepam without medical supervision, that could have caused nasty (and I mean potentially lethal) seizures. You got lucky.
