New here advice wanted thank you

Start of by apologising as my grammar isn’t the greatest lol

Basically cut it short for you guys I’m currently 25 always done various bits factory warehousing and now labouring ■■■■■ driving around the country in vans I used to work at a place called sdc who are a trailer manufacturer that got me interested in lorry to begin with since started a driving job as I said but I’m making peanuts 8.50 an hour so I thought if I’m driving all day dropping electricians around the country why not train to drive a lorry and get paid much better for it and not have to put up with old men moaning about what radio station is on no offence over 50s

Anyway since I’ve started looking into how to approach the license it’s left me a little confused I’m in the Mansfield Nottingham area there is a company called Pete Smyth who is very local to me who seem to offer a loan sort of thing but it’s the beginning bit I’m lost with the company also does a beginner pack for 250 quid it’s the medical theory test and day training is this my best approach? Also confused with this cpc can some one give me advice on were to start and if any one is local do I stand a good chance of employment once trained ive googled bits it seems it will need to be agency to start with sorry for boring you guys any advice will be very much apreacited

If Peters place is local then simply call in and ask as much as you need, they are very helpful and tbh you can’t go wrong with them

Even a phone call would have them explaining it to you till your comfortable with what you need to do

Also worth bearing in mind that Cat C doesn’t pay much more (in some cases less!!) than your 8.50ph

Remember that, as a Trucknet user, you get 10% discount off everything we do. But you MUST make it clear that you’re a Trucknetter.

Give the office a call, or drop in, and all your questions will be answered. And, if there’s anything left you don’t “get”, tell them and it will be explained a different way. Important that you fully understand what you’re meant to be doing.

Hope this helps, Pete

Given you are based near Notts I think you should go to see Mr Smythes place. I did and think they are spot on. The little Renault I learnt in was fantastic - and not that different to an 18t unit you will probably drive after passing. But it’s a hell of a lot easier to get around town in than something bigger.

I’d personally not pay for a starter pack - as the medical can be had for about £40 (nationwidemedicals.co.uk/nottingham) . And the theory tests are not that expensive and can be booked in around you. However that being said - if you are not too comfortable with book work then you might prefer someone to sort it for you.

In terms of work in Notts - well I’ve just turned down over £17/hour to work in Beeston driving an artic for Boots via agency. That’s class 1 - but you can get £12/13 an hour without trying hard on class 2 and do class 1 when/if you want to. You can also earn more if you are willing to do crap jobs at nights. I drove a rigid on nights for a bit delivering parts to car dealerships. It’s probably easier than warehouse work, but lugging cages and engines on a pump trolley wasn’t my idea of fun. A bloke who lives very close to me did his class 2 at Peter Smythes just before me and he’s now earning decent money driving for brakes.

If you do go down this route send me a PM when you have passed your class 2 and I’ll tell you an agency that you really really should avoid.

No - I’ve had no dealings with them. And don’t use any agencies in Nottingham anymore. Boots offer was from a more national agency - and given I was asked they must be desperate.

The clowns I’m talking about were on a different level. I could talk about it at length but I don’t want newbies thinking it’s normal. One highlight was landing on a flight from Amsterdam and having one of the agency staff call me whilst I was still on the plane - explaining he knew I hadn’t worked for them for a few weeks but some other drivers had done stuff over the weekend so he was calling everyone to get stuff off his chest. I ended up putting the phone on the seat whilst I was getting be bags from the overhead cabin and when I picked it up he was still ranting. Other highlights were the same plonker claiming I should call the agency to say before filling up with diesel in case the customer get’s upset.

That being said - I do know one decent agency run by a driver (who still drives) but it’s more specialised stuff. He offered to give me some work but I am not driving that far to drive a truck when there is good work on my doorstep.

You’re inviting unverifiable hearsay, which isn’t allowed on TN.

The reason is that we’d never get both sides of any story, then there’s the issue of TN having to find out who is correct whilst having to deal with the other side’s lawyers.

TN doesn’t go there, so (as suggested) PMs are the way to deal with it if it interests you that much.

:bulb: On this type of subject, PMs are win-win for all of us.
