Is it easy to gain employment with criminal conviction

hi all im new to this i was conidering a career in lgv/hgv ive got the money for test and thought i ask people in the know if im just wasting my time
ive phoned round a few test places on the web and there all promising me they can get me work they all stating me crazy prices and sound like double glazing salesmen.
they all saying they the best i wont name any companies but ive been quoted £1500 up to £3500 and ive always seen on the job sites you need experience.
if anyone can give me some advice and point me in the right direction would be ace thanks paul.

Most places won’t ask, obviously any jobs that may be transporting high value loads will likely run a CRB check which will show up anything and could possibly be an issue for them.

Probably BROKERS promising work

i do have to declare my conviction though as i wouldnt want to lose my job a couple of people on phone asked me if it was anything driving related but it isnt
and i have a clean licence thanks paul.

Didn’t mean try and hide it mate, just meant that most places won’t be bothered unless you’ve just served a stretch for murdering your ex boss or something

lol no i never murdered my boss

They won’t ask - and if they do ask they won’t care.

I’ve done ‘high value’ loads ranging from alcohol to pharmaceutical components (boots factory/rdc) in Beeston yesterday. I’ve also done cash deliveries - where the customer gives you a couple of grand. And I’ve never had to have any form of background check or dbs. No one so far has even bothered to contact my references - I know as my partner is one of them. I’ve even had a load of landrover engines which must have been worth a fair amount.

Certain very specialised roles might be different - but for the most part driving is a job which an ex-offender is not to be worried about. At one point they were going to train prisoners to become drivers upon release.

To be fair you don’t have a driving job yet and everytime you tell people about it it probably makes the chance of success much less.

I have a record but didn’t declare it. I would have much sooner had to explain myself six months down the road when they know how reliable i am rather than at the application stage.

best of luck with it all anyway

A lot of places won’t ask, so I’d not declare it voluntarily. If they do ask, don’t lie though.

thanks for that paul.

If you’ve got nothing to hide, then don’t worry about it. Just declare it if you wish or keep quiet if you wish, it’s entirely up to you.
My last employer knew I might do a stretch when I started with him and he kept his word and gave me my job back when I was released. I was with that company for 4 1/2 years. My new employer was told at the interview about my prison sentence and he wasn’t fussed and I’ve been here 15 years, so I like I say, I don’t think you’ll have much problems getting a job, unless your a ■■■■■■■■■■, then you’ve got no chance what so ever.
So good luck for your lessons and test and hope you get on the road soon.

I’m a prize tool on here sometimes - but I want to be serious and give you some proper advice.

Unless your name is made up you have given your full name and year of birth. So I’d ask for this thread to be deleted by a moderator now you have your answer.

I also had a gig via agency where I was given keys for high end car dealerships (think audi, vw, porshe etc) and went at night and opened up and delivered parts alone. Again no check - I could have robbed them blind to the tune of a fortune.

Haulage is weird - if they need a driver they need a driver. Like I said some stuff is different. But I would ask Albion or Rog to delete this if I were you.

no i havent put my real name and thanks for advice paul.

What were you convicted of. When were you convicted. And what was the sentence ?

Don’t tell him, Pike!

Some places ask for CRB check so not many chances with them I think, no airports, otherwise should be alright, but I wouldn’t say unless they ask, obviously if they ask CRB check then I would say straight away just to not waste anyone’s time.

I used to work with a bloke that did nearly 20 years for armed robbery. He’s a mate now, I meet up with him occasionally for a ride out on the motorbikes. All my biker mates have accepted him & welcomed him into the ‘gang’. He moans & whinges about lots of stuff but finding & keeping a job isn’t one of them.

I once sat the other side of a table interviewing what can only be described as a ‘circus strongman’ with facial tattoo’s. This was for a recovery mechanic who could well find himself turning up at 4am to rescue a lone female in a country lane. He was a lovely bloke & we spent 45mins+ trying to find a way to make it work. We couldn’t.

Very early in my working career I’m in a van with an ‘old skool’ bloke who I had lots of respect for. We’re in a layby & I offer to pay for the bacon cobs from the van. He told me how if it’s a bloke in the van then it’s usually a ‘■■■■■’. These blokes can’t get work on any rung of the ladder & this is one of the very few occupations open to them.

So I guess it depends very much on what you did & how you look today !
