Hey all. I’m new on here but the place seems helpful. So I’m currently a driver in the army however fed up and looking at getting out. Due to having a family job security and pay is a big consideration of wether I will do it or not. My main question is I currently make around 30k a year. will I make around this doing class one work with a good firm.

The answer, without a doubt, is YES. However, getting the job with a “good firm” immediately on leaving the forces may prove to be a different issue. To be fair, I would say you need to expect around £25k whilst gaining some civvy experience. Then move on and earn more than £30k. But allow a year for this. Maybe sooner, but I prefer to look on the cautious side.

Including performance pay I’ll make close to 30k. In my first driving job though many would say not with the best firm…

It also depends on how much you want to be at home, every night, every weekend.
I’ve taken on lads out of the army, well over 30k, but it’s Euro, sob they are away a lot.
If you want to be at home every night, then I’d say no. Possibly with a decent firm after a few years, but not with the sort of firms you’d start with. I used to get between £400 and £450 take-home on days. Between £25k and £30k gross. Specialist stuff like fuel tankers may push that up.
If you’re happy to be away all week, then yes. Even with the firms that get abused on here, you’d still take home between £500 and £600 per week as a tramper. So over £30k gross.
If you’re ex-forces you’ll probably have ADR, which may push your earnings up.
Cheers for all the replies. It’s definitely food for thought. I will get my cpc from the army and same with my adr I have it and would probably be able to refresh it just before I leave. It’s the heavy stuff I’m really interested in but I think if the money is right I would happily do tramping or the long distance stuff. Again thanks for all your help it’s really cleared some stuff up.
