We're should this be?

I’m driving a this daf today and the 5th wheel is on like a sliding bed. Is it in the right position?
Its the First time I’ve drove this unit so I’m none the wiser.
I’m hooked up to a standard refrigerated trailer too.
The fridge is about 2/3 ft from the headboard of the unit.

2 to 3 ft seems a bit too far for my liking, mine’s about 2 Ins from A frame where the leads are and probably about a foot back from headboard…

The maximum length of the whole outfit shouldn’t exceed 16.5 metres. The majority of trailers are 13.6 metre.

Hope this helps, Pete

Pin looks about right between the 2 axles is the daf a sleeper ? As you don’t say
Morrison’s daf’s have a bit of room between them what you gotta watch is snagging try legs and bashing the fridge it’s might be ok turning but belts the back of the cab when going down hill then onto a flat the top of the fridge gets bent toward the cab

Yeah it’s a sleeper, euro 6 xf. I’m not going to bother moving things back and fourth.
I’f the next driver wants to who knows what they are doing they can crack on =) plus I’m not far off home now.

I pit prob never been moved

The only way to be certain of the ideal spot for a sliding fifth wheel (assuming total length is within and legs lights suzies etc clear without issue an rough ground ) is to load the vehicle fully, preferably with the tractor as near max weight as possible, and use a weighbridge to work out the individual axle weights, an axle weigher is ideal but if you note the total vehicle weight every time your drive each one of the three tractor axles off the bridge, then, assuming the weighbridge is level to the ground, you will have three reasonably accurate axle weights.

Note, on some 3 axle tractors, moving the fifth wheel back actually increases the weight on the mid lifter, no its doesn’t make any sense but it works like this on some, so a bit of trial and error is sometimes called for.

No most people can’t be arsed, i do this (but use an axle weigher) when i fist get a new to me tractor unit which is going to be my regular steed, so i know that A i’m well within legally, and B how the vehicle behaves and handles with the fifth wheel in different positions, and the answer is quite a bit differently, eventually you end up with a happy medium.
