Essentials

Passed my Class 2 on the 13th and some how got the first job I applied for at a decent local firm. Feeling rather lucky as I’m fully aware it can be very difficult for new drivers to find work other than agency.

I just wanted to rack everyone’s brain on any gear I haven’t thought of and tips only years of experience could know.
The work involves nights out and it’s express freight/pallet work in a curtainsider. I’ve already been warned that warehouse blokes will overload pallets and to expect to be waiting around longer than everyone else for things as I’ll stand out like a sore thumb.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Go to the ‘Frequently asked questions’ forum.

Scroll down a bit and click on the topic ‘NIGHTS OUT - what should I take ?’

Lots of suggestions on there, -not all will be relevant to you.

Think of it as a camping trip that you get paid for.

Good Luck with your new career. :sunglasses:

Anti dipper spray a must

Sounds like you’ve got a trunking job… and yet it’s Class 2. I used to work in the freight/pallet work but during the day doing deliveries/collections. As you say “express” then maybe it’s one of the 24-hour specialists. A trunking job is usually an artic going to a hub, unloading, waiting, then reloading and coming back to depot. Normally leaving 1800-2000 and returning 0300-0500. But maybe you are doing a night shift of what I did.

You are right about overloading pallets and need to wary, and be keen on strapping up. Ensure the forklift puts the pallet on fully so you are not left with it protruding the curtain (2" max limit).
