Any advice please

Hi
I was wondering if anyone can give me any advice, I’m looking to train and hopefully start a career in LGV driving, I’m based in Merseyside and there’s so many training courses out there with mixed reviews, some cheaper than others. It seems that once I’ve read something positive, I then read something negative, so I’m a bit confused and reluctant to jump in at the mo. I’ve looked at pro-training solutions, specialised HGV and HGV training network, has anybody trained or had any experience with any of these? Thanks for taking the time to read.

Welcome to TNUK, you might be better off asking this same question on the “New and wannabe drivers forum” where you get a mixture of new and wannabe drivers and also lgv driving instructors .

I believe both specialised HGV and HGV training network are HGV training brokers and should be avoided.

A training broker will fix you up with a training company but you’ll have no say in which company you train with, you’re better off going direct to a training company who have their own trainers and vehicles.

My advice is to go to a reputable local company and meet the people who will be training you before booking, if they don’t have their own vehicles and trainers go somewhere else.

I’ll move this to the new drivers forum where you’ll get advice from people who have done training more recently and may know some good training companies in your area.

Thanks Tachograph, Bald bloke

Have you checked out all the info and links contained within the link in my signature below

Thanks that’s really helpful

I passed my test quite a while ago, certainly before I’d heard of Peter Smythe. I came across Peter here and had a look at his website and I must say if I was needing to advise somebody where to go he’d be at the top of the list.

I did my class 1 with Stobarts in runcorn. The price was similar as most places and you get a job interview with them at the end. In my case it turned into a job with them.

PM if you have any questions.

I passed with HGV Training Northwest

hgv-training-northwest.co.uk/

Trainers are very good, it cost £1100 for x4 4 Hour lessons, a 2 hour lesson before the test and the test itself.

He also took me up the test centre with another driver free of charge, to see the reversing in action and drive around the test roads.

Look at our offer. You could end up with a free course. Cant be bad!

Give the office a call in any case and you’ll be amazed at the difference between us and many others. Countless recommendations on here.

Thanks everyone for your help and advice, you’ve all been great

I recommend Peter Smythe.

I passed first time with Peter Smythe 3 weeks ago and I couldn’t be happier.

From beginning to end I did not find a single thing to be annoyed, upset or angry about, the way the treated me was very professional, kind and polite and I did not have a single issue with them.

I won’t have a single issue in going back in the future for class 1.

Hi sbell
Don’t know how old you are but down in the south I work for a company that recruit apprentice drivers…start them in vans…then put them through 7.5 ton test…18 ton then class 1
In the last three years I have seen at least 5 youngsters start in vans and are now class 1 drivers…
When I say young they are 20 to 30 years old.
It could be worth your while phoning around your local transport companies…bet you find one that might do the same thing …or even prepared to give it a go.
I am 58 and been driving a truck for 3 years… been in the hotel business, police, retail, banks and sales and it is by far the best job I have ever had…the worst paid but the most enjoyable work I have ever done. …but you have to love driving!

I’d also recommend Peter Smythe, not just on their excellent training (which got me a pass first time!) but also in the confidence they were able to instil in me that I could actually do this. Started my first paid work this week, straight into a 26t, and I believe that’s partly down to my trainer believing in me that I could do this. And it looks like I can! (the driving part at least!)

Thank you all for your great advice

I would also recommend you look at Peter Smythe I did both class 2 and 1 there top training company with really good people

Edit: didn’t notice date on original post
