I think CharversDad has it about right. The extra 2 hundred quid need to go into the bank for the next Truck and or Trailer On an aside a firm took some wheat out of our place to Ensus. Load York tip Ensus. 2 loads delivered and 1 loaded out of us. That has to be a good pay day Last edited by renaultman on Sun Jul 25, 2010 3:34 pm, edited 1 time in total.

Re: how much would you want after fuel?Christ if your only using £600 of diesel a week you cant be doing many miles? Paid by the job as oppose to the miles? Id say the lorry im in, not my own obviously, will use near 3 x what you use.. 1500ltrs/300gallon, maybe more depending on the trips.

Re: how much would you want after fuel?
It's because it's all fantasy, that's why. They daren't risk posting the REAL figures because they know that I'll be here like a shot pointing and laughing at them only just breaking even, so they post some ficticious BS figures to make it look like they're earning some serious wonga. Message to "Employer" Mr Rob K. Regarding your vacancy for a Translator. I would like to apply for this position as I genuinely believe I can translate/de-code the gobbly-de-gook above. Or maybe that should be Globby-de-gook? I am assuming this will be a long term contract (an extremely long, long term contract), and whilst I fully understand the difficulties you are obviously encountering with your "client", I am hoping you will be increasing the salary offered. I look forward to your response. Yours faithfully, Andy1961. Trucking - "a job for life son". HA! Name that company/job now and win yourself £10!

You don't seem to be able to get King Size Mars Bars any more so we'll all have to settle for a "Mars Duo" instead... Paul
Re: how much would you want after fuel?just a question all the truk mags ive read some 22 years old the od and the hauliers have said theres no money in it for the last 20 years so whos lying if the moneys that good we would all be at it i would like to see the figures if anyones willing to post them up
i hate xf 105s
Re: how much would you want after fuel? The simple response to that is that haulage is a huge and very varied industry. There are lots of types of work, and for each of those types there are lots of companies willing to (sub)contract work to an owner driver. There are also lots of different makes, models, specifications and ages of trucks.
The point I am trying to make is that there is such a lot of variation in so many aspects of the industry that you can't just say "there's no money in it" as you might find one man on one job is losing shedloads of money and yet another man on another job will be making a healthy profit. Paul
Re: how much would you want after fuel?i know its the haulage way to bs there always no money in it or they pay [zb] wages and so many being queezed out or will they not do the work for a poor return all i know is hauliers have been moaning about crap rates for 25 yrs so i tend to see robs point but not how he puts it across

Re: how much would you want after fuel?Hi
For what its worth (not alot probably) Ive been an owner driver on and off for 23 years. Ive never got rich and have actually lost alot of money in the past. My first contract was with a dutch company who went bust owing me £12000, and you don't recover from that very easily. Ive always run older trucks so my maintainance bills are higher but my repayments are alot less than someone running new. This is my preference as I always like to be in a position to quit if I have to without losing the house. Like Dreva I alsothink that what Rob says has alot of truth, more so after struggling through the last 2 years, but it is the way he puts his views that could maybe be improved. Now, if I can clear £1200 after tolls and fuel Im happy with that, but things can go wrong and then I don't get anything. Example is a few weeks ago a tyre on my trailer blew in France. It damaged 3 mudguards and an airbag. I wasn't allowed to change my own wheel even though it would have taken me around 30 min so I had to pay 300 euros to have it done for me. The repairs (done myself) and time off the road came to around £1000. I have a claim against the tyre company as the tyre was about 2 months old so hopefully will recover some of that. This week ive cleared around £1300 after costs but to be honest in most cases being an od now is more about creating a job for yourself where you have a bit more control over what you have to do to earn a living. Graham
Re: how much would you want after fuel?
that about sums it up

Another one who knows what he's taking about and not some claptrap
Re: how much would you want after fuel?
I don't disagree. But by your own admissions in earlier posts, you're not even sure you're going to make a profit on your own work, so you are hardly one to preach are you? If there are so many jobs with "healthy profits" then why aren't you doing them? I think we all know the answer to that one without it needing to be spelt out....
