ADR and carrying limited quantities

Can anyone advise on what a haulage operator needs to do to conform with carrying limited quantities of hazardous substances? I don’t have an ADR qualification but some loads can be carried apparently? Thanks in advance.

DieselDave will be along soon to correct any mistakes I make but as far as I am aware:

Under 8 tonnes: nothing required, adr familiarity advised but not required.

Over 8 tonnes: as above but LQ diamonds front and rear.

According to my broker, GIT insurance covers LQ without the need to inform them. It’s only if you are doing orange plate work the insurer needs specifics. You also don’t need a DGSA for LQ.

If you need anything out of the ordinary it’s up to the consignor to inform you.

The only specialist kit I carry for LQ is a couple of magnetic placards so I don’t have to use the adhesive ones on my units paintwork.

Hi,

Lots of people misunderstand the notion of LQs, so I’ll have ask you what kind and size of packages you mean please?

Can anyone answer? As I can’t be bothered sticking placards and peeling off paintwork when done… can I use orange boards instead of placards when running under L.Q?
I will be at 19,000 kgs and I hold ADR. carrying WD40.

Hi Alfa1M,

I’ve answered your (same) question in the other topic, but the answer hasn’t changed for this one.

Copy and Paste:
I’m afraid the short answer is that you can’t use orange plates instead of LQ placards.

There are magnetic LQ placards available, and there’s another kind of LQ plate that folds just like some orange plates do, so those are the choices for those who “can’t be bothered” with the sticker kind.

The only scenario that I can think of in which you can use orange plates instead of (any kind of) LQ placards is when you’re carrying a load that is subject to full ADR, then you’ve topped up with LQs because ONLY then you wouldn’t need the LQ placards.

Its the quantity of goods that is the criteria, not the total weight. As Nsmith said, under 8 tonnes is no problem, over 8 tonnes you need LQ placards. And of course the goods have to be packaged in correct LQ manner.

As a rough guide…

1.) Not all dangerous substances can be packaged as LQs.

2.) For those substances that are allowed to be carried as LQs, there is a receptacle size limit which varies (generally) between 100g/ml - 5Kg/L, so there is quite some variation.

3.) LQs can ONLY be packaged as receptacles in a cardboard box OR receptacles on a stretch-wrapped tray.
[Max box mass = 30Kg, Max tray mass = 20Kg.]
