CODE comes up on Mercedes screen

I have a problem with a Mercedes 7.5 Tonner Pantechnicon, its not starting and the word ‘CODE’ comes up on the display. Anyone seen this before? Will make some investigations later this morning when i’m in the office. Thanks in advance.

We phoned Mercedes, they suggested disconnecting the battery and connecting again. Did that, no change, just the word ‘CODE’ on the dash. I was hoping they could send a van down with some diagnostic kit but no, the lorry has to be taken to a Merc garage hence put on the back of a fantastic looking recovery truck which made light work of the job. Will see what they find.

Who’s paying for the “fantastic looking recovery truck”?

Code means it is not recognising the transponder in the key.

Can sometimes just be a one-off and taking the key out then putting it back in can solve it, we have similar sometimes on DAF’s and Merc’s where the key isn’t recognised.

The dealer should have suggested this course of action first. The code simply means the security code has not been received to allow the vehicle to start.

Expect an expensive bill from Merc, either a New ECU os some description or new transponder ring reader and or new keys as well.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Will post what is found.

cold weather sometimes makes them wonky…try sticking the key down your skiddies,or on a rad for 5 mins to heat it up…if its a chipped key, then its similar to a flat battery sometimes.
same for renault megans and cars with similar electronic keys.

I realize that this is no good for a pantechnican but I have had this problem on my Actros, turned out to be the ABS lead was shorting out, just disconnected it, turned ignition off, ‘CODE’ disappeared off the screen & started no problem

Thanks for all your replies, Mercedes put in a new transponder and made up 2 new keys. Still wouldn’t start. A national specialist has now been sent for who says it will be a wiring problem which they are now searching for. Meanwhile we have to rent out another truck for a few days.

Sounds like inductor collar on the ignition switch has gone down,New ignition switch and key required.
