New owner driver

I’m thinking of starting my own business as an owner driver probably a container work as I have experience with that. I’ve been researching but can’t really find an answer to the following questions.

  1. how much does owner driver get paid per week
  2. on overage, how many miles will be done a week
  3. what is the minimum pay to be earning a week as I know fuel is the biggest cost in this industry
  4. to rent or buy truck?

if anyone can tell me more about their outgoings like insurance, overnight parking, I will be appreciate it

thanks

Search for posts by nsmith1180, he’s posted loads of info about his starting and first few months of operation, probably answer most of your questions to start with at least.

As the owner, you decide how much to pay yourself.
Which can be nothing then use the money to run the truck.
For a lorry, don’t worry about the image or make.
A Renault Premium is a decent truck and narrow for entrances.
Goods in transit insurance is a few thousand.
On average 400 miles a day.
Rates change for empty running on containers and loaded.
An accountant to pay for for the tax bill.

  1. how much does owner driver get paid per week Whatever you can afford. It won’t be much
  2. on overage, how many miles will be done a week Shortest week so far was 1200km, longest over 3k
  3. what is the minimum pay to be earning a week as I know fuel is the biggest cost in this industry There is no minimum, its all based on two things. How much work is available and how much it costs you to do it.
  4. to rent or buy truck? I’d say rent/lease, several others on here would say buy. its different strokes for different folks.

if anyone can tell me more about their outgoings like insurance, overnight parking, I will be appreciate it

Insurance: at least £7k a year including GiT.
Overnight Parking: variable, depends on where you are parking.

As the owner, you decide how much to pay yourself. Utter rubbish. As an o/d you don’t decide how much to pay yourself, as suggested above, you pay yourself if there is something left when all the bills are paid.
Which can be nothing then use the money to run the truck. Which for the first couple of months will likely be nothing, as the truck will have eaten all your money and half your overdraft
For a lorry, don’t worry about the image or make. Worrying about image is a personal thing. Worrying about make is a must. What are the dealers like in your area? Has your local under the arches ever seen an Iveco HiWay’? What is your personal relationship with a brand? After all, its going to ■■■■ up most of your money for the next 5-7 years, you had better start with something you don’t hate.
A Renault Premium is a decent truck and narrow for entrances. Narrow for Entrances? What are you smoking? The cab may be narrower but the wheels are still the same distance apart as a wider truck, there are standard dimensions for HGVs in Europe. On that note, for most, it isn’t the cab that you really need to worry about. You can thread a unit through most gaps, its the 40-45 ft tail thats the issue.
Goods in transit insurance is a few thousand. GiT for me is less than 500 quid. Its the motor policy which is thousands.
On average 400 miles a day. If you are averaging 400 miles a day you are going mega distance by container standards
Rates change for empty running on containers and loaded. On Wincanton they don’t, its the same rate but start point for the job varies so its harder to predict. I’m finally getting good at it, after four months, I predicted last weeks invoice to within £150!
An accountant to pay for for the tax bill.I wish my accountant would pay my tax for me, ill just settle for him figuring out how much i have to pay.

Git insurance £420 p.a
Truck insurance including trailer cover ££3500 for a 15k scania
Just got first truck and this is what I’m paying

I paid about £4,000 a year for insurance, including road risks, GIT, public liability, breakdown etc and it stayed fairly constant for the entire time.

Sorry to hijack this but I’m looking at buy a unit 7 years old to do traction work out of the docks paying £1.40 per mile for ccc I’ve been looking at the figures and I reckon I’d be make a £25k loss in the first year with buying the unit and setting up the O license. Where am I going wrong or are there company’s paying better money

What way are you working the figures??
Are you starting out taking on a new £70k truck■■?
£25k loss seems steep@ £1.40mile all the same!!!

Was thinking of being an owner driver, a 2011 fh 460 on finance and first time insurance and git. These were my sums if anyone thinks I’m wrong please correct me.
Outlay per week…
Truck 400
Tyres, punctures 50
Trailer hire 120
Insurance and git 125
Service station’s 100
Basic self maintenance oil, filters etc 40
Tax, mot 12
Diesel 1500mls @1.02 900
TOTAL OUTLAY £1747

Money in. 1500mls @£1.40 = £2100
Wages £353

1500mls @£1.50 = £2250
Wages £503

Nothing extra for breakdowns
I’m totally wrong in my figures as I have priced the insurance and finance.
Just busted my dreams of owner driver.

£400 pw week for a 6 year old FH?

Surely you could lease a newer truck with R&M for less than that?

Ken.
