I’ve put together a tool for fleet managers to check whether a job you’re considering doing is worth your while.
It’s free to use and will remain so, if it’s useful to anyone that is. On that note – could you offer any feedback, does it provide any value, is there anything that could make it better?
Interesting, just tried it and it came out almost spot on at £2.12 per mile and that was from France to UK, traction only…well done will use it again, highly recommended must be why I am
extremely rich through transport a great way to make money.Merry Xmas.

It was spot on for me too, £83/ mile was correct as it was 2.5 miles, what it doesn’t calculate is the time taken to empty the septic tank, then the cost of tipping and the time taken for tipping then cleaning down.
So yep it was correct £/mile just doesn’t mean much in my job.
One job I do I don’t actually pick anything up I just pump it round and circulate the stuff (because the pumping station isn’t working correctly) £47 per hour
Hope you had a great time during the holidays and thanks a bunch for your answers – it’s great to get open and down-to-earth feedback.
Before getting to some of the issues raised, just one note – the tool is meant for general road haulage companies. However if there are some other types of transport companies for which we could make a similar tool that would take into account some specifics, feel free to ping.
Transc:
Can it be changed to Km/ euro ?
Yes, and will be updated fairly soon.
Driveroneuk:
3. Better if fuel price shown ex vat?
Same here, will be up soon.

As for the lads who see this tool as too basic perhaps – guess I’d like this to be used by guys who like to have a specific and easy to use tool that answers a need, even though it might be doable on a napkin or in your head.
I just tried it again, entering the same parameters as before. Nothing seems to have changed. (did you need to update the link?) It comes up exactly the same:
With the milage (incorrect spelling) being 195 mi, MGP (incorrect, should MPG)14, fuel price 139p (still inc. vat).
Thanks for the quick reply Sir. PM’d initially since I didn’t want to “spam” the forum with my questions on this, but suppose a public discussion can only make this tool useful to the members sooner.

Yes, I was preparing a bit of an updated version, it’s still very much in the works but here it is (now at the same address) with a slightly improved interface, less spelling errors hopefully and the pre-filled fuel price figure excluding VAT.
Also, what is “I” as in IPM? (per mile)
That was supposed to stand for income, and was an error on my part since technically the tool gives an estimation of the profit, not income.

My apologies. Most of what was discussed was already here in the thread anyway.
Yes its better now.
4 suggestions:
Pre set DERV price (now ex vat ) seems a bit low.
Would be quicker and easier to use if we did not have to manually delete the 0 from each box every time. Could it either disappear automatically on clicking in the box or just not be there at all?
auto suggestion once you start to type in the name of a town.
In one of the tbd boxes at the bottom, could the total estimated profit be shown alongside the ppm?
Will make it so that it is automatically pulled from a credible source every day. I saw a few around but are any you would recommend? (Having 2 or three choices would be prefect.)

It can disappear; could you just tell me why it bothers you? Is it because when you click in the input field then you have to delete it and put in your number? (It might seem like an obvious reason but for me it’s important to understand this.)

Got it, probably doable.

Yes, that was the plan actually. Any other metric that could be useful along with that?

Sorry, can’t help with that.

Just seems to be an extra process that’s unnecessary. Have to delete it from each and every box each and every time.

That would be great.

Excellent job, much improved. Thanks for taking on board the feedback.
The only observation I have now is a minor one, in the profit boxes at the bottom sometimes the value is slightly difficult to decipher as there seems to be a 0 missing.
