Iran Container Company (ICC)

Are there any old ICC drivers out there?

24 speed Mack R600’s.

Des Coombes, Steve Trybowski, Mike Phillips, Peter Best, Joe Merceica, Michel Vranjes, and of course Gerd Behrends in the Salzburg office.

Great days and great memories.

We were based just outside Salzburg with an office onn the autobahn border at Walserberg the theory being that Iranian drivers brought us containers up from Iran which were transferred to our skeletals at the Salzburg terminal and we then tipped them and reloaded all over Europe from Sweden to Spain and brought them back to Salzburg for the Iranians to take the rest of the way.

Of course the beauty of it was that very often there was no loaded container available when we returned to Salzburg so we had to hang about waiting for them expenses paid at the Pension Fenninger complete with swimming pool and Sauna. Great days!

Hello Jazzandy, there used to be a few Iranians reloading at Franz Kupecheck (not sure of the spelling) in the goods railway yard in Vienna around 1980. I think the address might of been Franz Josepf bahnhof or something like that, they all had Macks, a few of them had their wife and kids with them and I.C.C. certainly rings a bell with me. We all used to park up at The Prater Stadium near The Big Wheel in those days, did you ever do any work out of Vienna ?.

Regards Steve.

Hi Steve,

I think ICC had gone beforthat date. Could have been Pars intl. Ctrs. Or maybe Hirsch or Marand.

We never loaded inVienna. Our main agent was Franz Welz and Lagermax Both of them at the Salzburg Guterbahnhof if we loaded in Austria. A large part of the export losses were from Hillman in Coventry with parts for the Iranian Peykans.

Incidentally those Iranian drivers were usually the salt of the earth and would do anything for you as I found later when Tehran became a major destination for me.

Andy

Sorry, typo in my last message.

Should have read export loads not export losses!

Just in case any of you were wondering…

The cargoes we brought in were mainly cotton, mohair, pickled goatskins (most of which were shipped to the U.S. via Bremerhaven), and specialist wood used for musical instruments and in particular violins.

The containers were 20ft. standards and 40ft. boxes and open tops almost all made in UK at Central Containers in Walsall?

The trailers were all Crane Fruehauf or from other UK manufacturers. The company had an office just off Leicester Square where new drivers were interviewed and also had two Guy Big J’s which were used for UK haulage mainly out of Felixstowe.

Although we were based in Salzburg, we had another ‘home’ in Europoort where Hudig and Pieters represented the company and we used to stay at the De Beers seaman’s mission or with an English woman who had a B&B in the heart of Rotterdam. Often we could wait over aweek there waiting for loaded ctrs. to come over from UK!

And here is the advert for the Paykan

An Iranian Hillman Hunter

Those are the deluxe versions with the 1725cc engines. The standard ones were a good deal more basic.

I’ll try to upload a photo of my Mack later today

Bet you could still get the drum kit in Hillman eh Andy…

You obviously know me quite well reddesertfox!

Drivers I’m still in touch with include Steve Trybowski, Mike Phillips and George Fardell.

Steve had the distinction of imbibing interesting substances at the time and had just done an overnight trunk from Scotland.

The yard foreman knocked on his window to wake him up and a bleary eyed Trybowski leant his head out, declared "I’m an orange " and promptly went back to sleep!

Forgot to mention that I’m also in touch with Bernie Willis who drive for International Trailers, manager the late great Brian Starbucks, which later became Whitetrux.

He also drove for PIE, ICC and Pars Intl. delivering trucks from Holland to Tehran with me.

He had a big op last year in Oz where he lives, but was over here last Autumn and looking fighting fit.

Wish somebody could explain how to load photos onto the site. My problem is converting the original photos to digital via my scanner which is a good one. Any help out there?

A couple of photos for your thread Andy;
This one taken by Peter Cannon (Asian Transport), he says the location is very farmiliar, but he can’t name it…
It was a full load of Johnny Walker whiskey being unloaded!

This one taken by Gordon Pearce (Asian Transport). Again location unknown. Luv the sleeper box on the Tempo Mack.

Both those Macks are Iranian driver trucks. You can tell because the Salzburg fleet had straight exhausts.
The Peter Cannon photo I reckon could be a border with turnout policy (before TIR) so could be Kapikule or Ipsala or might even be Gradina. The building looks a bit Bulgarian Balkan.

Just a thought, both the Iranian Macks do not have TIR plates so this was definitely pre-TIR.

Hi Jazzandy,

A read of this topic might help with uploading your piccies:

BTW, I used to run to Vienna.
The work was a mix of DT/Gebrüder Weiss with the occasional reload from Falpa, or round trips for Schenker and Panalpina.

I remember the Prater and the Riesenrad fondly along with the impromptu football matches in Gebrüder Weiss’ yard between the Commie block and the EEC when we were weekended.

Happy days!!

It’s still quite a palaver!

Why can’t they just have click and upload like Facebook?

Sorry forgot to thank you for the info Diesel Dave.

We used to thumb lifts home from Salzburg with lads on the Austrian runs and often share the driving to achieve Salzburg to Zeebrugge in one hit!

When we were weekended in Salzburg ICC put us up in a lovely guesthouse near the Walserberg border, the Pension Feninger. Highly recommended.

Maurice.

Hi Maurice,

Welcome to the thread.

You must have been slightly before my time. When I joined ICC had just bought 20 new Macks to be based in Salzburg. I was shipped over to Europoort on the TFS service. Des Coombes was staying at De Beers seamans mission where we all were put up while we learned to drive the quadruplex gearboxes and waited for our first loads.

I seem to recall a guy called Fagin who was driving a Mack shunting in the UK.
