Some trucks they are !! . Bigger and better over there --how about some spec details ?—toshboy

Toshboy; Do you remember Smiths Concrete starting out with those Austin/BMC mixers? I suppose they went with what Amey specced for their own wagons.

My first & so far only experience with a mixer. Laying the reactor floor at Sizewell B power station, late '80s.

Muckaway. Yes i remember that Smiths Concrete had all Commer TS3s before the 51/49 merger and from then on the Companies ran the same vehicle types and plant (as they do now with Hanson) Amey supplied the management of the Company -in fact Oxford Premix supplied the sales force at that time . i suppose over the years it has worked very succesfully much to my surprise since Amey went off the radar ! --------------- toshboy

Hi Norfolktrucker .Well you had a good starting point! – Sizewell B -do you remember that specialist French Company that contracted the deep trench around the total site and filled it with an impervious concrete mix containing a chemical --it softend the truckmixer tyres and rubber boots etc -terrible stuff --Tarmac had a steelfields plant and truckmixers on it .--------i wasnt there long !—toshboy

Bachy Soletanche? They did the deep piles for Oxford University projects; I took loads of10mm for the Chemistry buildings in Mansfield Road.

Hi Nathan .That was the name -BACHY–an interesting job at the time -Tarmac dry batched up the mix -high % PFA content -no water – Bachy had a liquid plant and pumped it into the mixers -a very sloppy mix spilling round the loading area whatever it was but damaging to rubber never found out its composition -a secret apparently -most wierd!--------------------Toshboy

Hi Toshboy, yes sounds like waccy Bachy  I couldn’t understand why the the 10mm was added to the concrete then piled; Surely adding extra 10mm to a 20-5mm batch would make it leaner? It could have something to do with the high water table and deep basements around Oxford?

An older Leyland chassis with i think a body built by one of the Thompson group of companies

If that’s driven off the pto I bet she had a queue up the hills when loaded…

Hi Muckaway, It looks like a riever and lightweight so would be well underpowered by todays standards- 6hp per ton was the critera then .PTO was only for mixing/discharge.transit agitating was by front crankshaft pump (absorbing 20 bhp) At Premix we ran Truck mixers as opposed to Agitators such as RMC etc where the batcher was responsible for water addition .We did not normally transit mix ,water being the drivers responsibility and mixing on site ,its changed now of course and so the Rmc way is the norm and more controllable for QS reasons —toshboy

Smiths Concrete are you (know what) hot about additional water; Sign for this sign for that, they even have a book where if you think something might be slightly against the rules you have to fill it in and get customer to sign it as a sort of disclaimer. I’m glad we’re not that close to them as I hate the paperwork I have to do…

heres one from the middle east part of lafarge

My sentiments with you. Drivers deliver a product certified as correct at plant then has to judge (not measure)the slump .3 different people can have 3 seperate judgements --ask paddy–tolerance is + or - % – wtf-- im a driver in the middle .my opinion is ALL concrete should be mixed at plant in a static mixer with recorded ingredients -slump calibrated by amp meter load of mixer – load it–driver deliver it–end of --toshboy

LAFARGE HAVE BOUGHT 12 OF THESE DAFS ,I DONT KNOW IF THERE GOING TO BE COMPANY TRUCKS OR PASSED ON TO ODS

With the increasing tare weights, getting 8m3 on an 8w will be a thing of the past soon.Do the firms still own the drums, ODs own the truck?
