Leyland Roadtrain

Hi I drove for bibby in the 80s at kingwinford my first truck was a 280 roadtrain used to take latch lap fencing nation wide loved the job plenty of stories stayed with bibby for ten years ending on the Budweiser contract my truck was l3bud

You could try Kev Dennis, he lives somewhere Lincolnshire way can’t think exactly where? Maybe someone on here knows a more exact location. He always has British wagons in use & For Sale, he runs a couple of Roadtrains himself round the Show circuit pulling his trailer usually loaded with something interesting! Chris

The low datum cabbed Roadtrain ,photo attached is EX BRS Oxford contract Atlet forklifts ,its still there AT Rushgreen motors ,I know the full history of this vehicle .

About time you bought it I think Steve, give it a good home  Chris

Hello Chris , I would love too but the cab is very rusty and I would think to find another one very unlikely :open_mouth: so for now it stays there ! a shame because this was always my favourite Roadtrain on BRS and for it to survive in the atlet livery is telling me something ,plus I knew both the drivers who had this plus me on holiday relief .

Hello Stu
TWF ( transport warehousing facilities ) were quite a big outfit with depot’s nationwide, they had some good contracts with big name customers, and also did quite a lot of continental work.
I worked for Bibbys ( Leeds depot ) not too long after the takeover, the fleet back then was all leyland, from sherpa to roadtrain.
Most of the older TWF stuff was sold off, Marathons, clydesdales, etc. Three clydesdale rigids were kept on , two were cut down and made into tractor units, for yard shunting, these were left in theTWF orange livery, the other was converted into wrecker for the leeds depot, and painted bibby blue.
these were some of the leeds depot Roadtrains, which were re-painted TWF motors.

Good luck with finding a decent Roadtrain to restore.

Jerry

Went to School with Gary Leader, I think he’s still at Bibby’s and worked with John Gillam at Hoyer

I used to deal with Kingwinsford depot (real nice fellow in the traffic office) and they did storage work for Western Transport on behalf of Halfords at Redditch (bikes mainly!) I think John Darbyshires of Appleton Thorn, Warrington became part of TWF and they ran the bull nosed Mercs. Tidy fleet as well!

Chris ,the only thing that sort of winked at me and Charlie was the bloody big dog :open_mouth:  ,if it was a wink I didn’t let him twice !!! "it wont hurt you " yerrrr ok gone --------------

Hi all, well i love looking at the old trucks in the magazines and at transport shows, some of the time and effort put into them is amazing. Even better when my grandad and dad start saying what hes driven pointing them out to me…

Looking through some old photos a few weeks ago, theres one of me in the drivers seat of my old mans Leyland roadtrain, must have been about 5 at the time  and thought id LOVE to get hold of one and restor it to the old colours

If anyone knows any information on the where abouts or experiances with them id love to know! The firm was based in Kingswinford in the W.Midlands called TWF but was taken over by Bibby distribution, i’d say about late 80’s early 90’s…

After any info really, driving them, places for parts etc… anythings good!

good luck finding a roadtrain, would love one myself,my dad had 2 when steetley ran out of dover in the early eighties.
Rush green has a few but have been there for years and he will want silly money especially if its got a ■■■■■■■ in it,either way he wont be cheap.
The other option is to check military disposal agents like jacksons or witham specialist vehicles, but will more than likely be a 6x4 and a scammell s26,but cab will be good and although its got a rolls royce in it ,it will have done sod all work,or buy classic n vintage commercials magazine.
