Diamond T's in different places

This excellent picture accompanied a reader’s letter to a newspaper yesterday,

It looks like a Diamond T being useful at Stonehenge in 1958, the steering axle of the trailer appears to have 4-pairs of twin wheels on it. Plenty of storage space under the trailer deck, maybe it’s a step-frame trailer with an auxilliary floor built up on it. The site is protected by reinforced matting.

And on the other side of the world the, apparently, first roadtrain in Australia, I’m sure someone will contest this claim, so I’ll include the source website URL, images.google.co.uk/url?q=http:/ … istory.asp

This could have the type of sleeper cab where the bed is above the cab!, that looks like the driver’s swag (bedroll) on the rack hanging off the headboard, of course it could be a rolled up sheet. The opening windscreen was the air-con system.

nice pics sheeter! theres a lot of good atmosphere in them old ones!

You did say someone would contest that Dave.

The following are taken from Kurt Johanssen’s memoirs ‘A Son Of ‘The Red
Centre’’ published by himself.

It doesn’t difinitively dispute the claim but the text makes it clear that the first
train trailers he manufactured are as pictured - 4 axle super single affairs
whereas the one with the drums is obviously not that. Also the Diamond T he
says was the first completed has a front side blowing exhaust. However the
drums were part of a complete purchase he made of all the
drums leftover from the war in Darwin, so the picture is certainly one
of the earliest though.

Who cares? It was just an excuse to post some more Diamond T and road
train pics.

BTW, the left hand page above is of the stock trailers under construction.

Salut, David.

What else can one say but thank you very much, wonderful pictures ,andalso the pages from the book as well ta very much,

Looking at the top picture of the ‘DT’ at Stonhenge it looks like it is still in Military spec and more than likely served in WW2, great pics love black and white photos
