Gardner 6LYT

One of the two ERF E16, Gardner 6LYT with twin-splitter, acquired with Lowe of Paddock Wood. Both were 6x4 units. I photographed this on 29/09/1996 on the fuel pump at Turners Newmarket depot, early Sunday morning IIRC. Both were soon disposed of; one was sold to Eric Vick, the other had a compressor fitted on the chassis and was used internally at British Sugar Wissington factory. It was there for a good number of years, maybe it still is.

These would have been a most unusual purchase for Lowes. The company was ■■■■■■■ through and through thanks in part to two of their fitters: Brian Barden and Eddie Bowden, neither of whom was very fond of Gardner. Even stranger when considering that Paddock Wood was the main operating centre for Jack Henley who at this time had switched his long standing loyalty from Gardner to ■■■■■■■■

Brian and Eddie however had left Lowes well before the LYTs appeared to set up Transport and Refrigeration Services on the North Farm Estate in Tunbridge Wells. Transport and Refrigeration was to develop into a Foden Service Agent and a Recovery Company with sometime customers with familiar names like: Farrants, Chapmans, Tilcon, G.Burgess & son, Nitrovit, and Mustills. Some years after start up one of the now better known ■■■■■■■ afficianados started his apprenticeship with them…Mick Gould.

Those names bring back memories from the past. A sad reflection, but I think the only one still going is G.Burgess & Son.
