Dutch marques: cab- and bodybuilders

Just a kick-off as a lot of questions, details, pictures and expertise might be worth to keep central.

May I suggest to follow the relevant reference for every marque?

  1. van Eck

  2. van Beurden

  3. De Graaff

  4. Verheul

  5. Fraanje

  6. van Dijk

  7. Hoekstra

  8. Bulthuis

  9. Rondaan

  10. Roset/Halcarros/JaRo

  11. Paul/van Weelde/Paul&van Weelde

  12. van Stenis

  13. Werkspoor

So feel free to continue/add/correct…

  1. Koster

If we allow also bodybuilders of busses:

  1. Hainje

  2. Den Oudsten

  3. Smit

  4. Bova

  5. Berkhof

I notice that you put Paul and Paul & van Weelde under the same heading. Are both Pauls actually the same one? This needs clarifying.

I say this, because both firms have been reported as having built cabs on LV75 chassis. It would be unusual for a company to invest in the design and tooling for two different cabs to compete with each other at the same time (Foden experts- shut up! ). This is another example of the intriguing complexities of the Dutch motor vehicle industry.

Fair point! Let’s await how things go on…same with Roset/Halcarros/JaRo and (without intending to
want to play the director over here) when the harvest is big and different, we can split…deal?

To add some more, starting with companies who supplied truck cabs also:

  1. Touw, Bergen op Zoom

  2. Hondebrink, Almelo

  3. Alberink, Borne

  4. Ligthart, Julianadorp

  5. Quirijns, Sprang-Capelle

  6. Jansen, Purmerend

  7. Buca, Buchten

Looking at companies most known for busbodies:

  1. Smit, Appingedam (assuming number 17 is Smit, Joure)

  2. Den Oudsten & Domburg

  3. Domburg, Montfoort (after the splt up between dO and D)

  4. Jac. Met, Alkmaar

  5. Schmidt, Middenbeemster (I can’t leave this one out!)

  6. Kuip, Wognum

  7. Van Leersum, Hilversum

  8. Van Eerten (ECF), Ede

More to follow.

Hopefully, our own pooled knowledge, plus that of people who have not yet contributed, will make these threads into a valuable reference work. All I can say is, keep up the good work, everyone who has an interest.

Thank you so much till now for refreshing the list…I shall prepare an alphabetical list today,

According to this:
oudedaf.nl/transportbedrijf_ … _sneek.htm
…this Kromhout has a Bulthuis cab:

Here’s another:

Few people (can) know, but Roset made the cabs for DAF starting in 1954

I did not know! What I do know is that in 1966 the region of Antwerpen (faced with a lot
of unemployment adjacent to Limburg-region) our government helped DAF establishing a
cab- and axle-factory in Oevel-Westerlo, close to the canal. Strange that for close to now
50 years, all cabs and axles are shipped by road…with 7 cabs per shipment, that counts!

An update

@En-Tour-Age…I assume it was a short period because in some source (Commercial Motor) an
article was printed that Roset worked exclusively for Beers since 1957, hence DAF had production
in Eindhoven (or again outsourced) till 1966 when Oevel-factory was a fact.

Stupid enough, been in Eindhoven-plant many times, I do not recal any cab-production, they were
just hanging on the ceiling before the marraige with the chassis but that was obvious since 1966.

Some suggestions on the cab-listing:

  1. extension with (known) year of origin/existence
  2. extension with current website with info and history
  3. extension with some mode for pictures…

Hey ERF, do you know who converted the first DO daf’s with a sleeper, we had three of them and two were done.
The Daf dealer told us you could order by him and so we did but never known who did it.
the last of '61 had it off factory.

Eric,

@Eric: it took some time to search…and actually none of my sources is
definte…only at time it was quite normal you had the changes done
locally. Here two examples from DO 2000’s

DAFX: Tractor with sleeper made by MEDEMA from Appingedam, whereas
the trailer is from DAM also from Appingedam. Model is from 1958-1958
as also the temp-registration indicates.

DAFY: Drawbar with sleeper (sort of semi-top) made by Paul & Van Weelde
from Nieuwerkerk a/d IJssel and this model is from 1964-1965.

The two DO 2000’s you speak about might for example been outsourced by
the DAF-dealer to Roset, P&VW, Koster etc.

I will check further
