I actually asked the topic question through my mp about 25 years ago. I got the obligatory letter from the minister of/for/from Transport explaining how dangerous it would be to have too much information on the motorway signs.
It seems now they can advertise Costa, Greggs, Burgers and Marks and Sparks but not the price of fuel or what cards they take.
