Do you agree that the law needs revising to 50mph for SC speeds for HGV ■■ Assuming the road and conditions were suitable ■■
At the very least I would like to see a new road designation introduced for the more suitable major A roads we have, maybe call them AA roads where we can do 50mph.
Whirlwind:
So being on the limiter on an A road would be safe you think
you wouldn’t be on the limiter if you are doing 50 mph, unless you have the miss-furtune of driving a truck that has been set back to 50!!! and to be honest there are a lot of A roads that you can happily drive on the limiter even set at 56, and there are some you wouldn’t want to do 40 on, its all down to road conditions, but as drivers we are not capible of working that out for ourselves, we have to have our hands held all the time
The question is whether you think the speed needs revision from the 40mph we have now to 50mph where suitable, not what speed you would like to drive, be realistic Phil, you will never see 60mph on an A road of any description, and they are unlikely to start posting speed limits which vary in 5mph increments, would it be suitable and better for all if we could do 50 instead of 40, Legally, that’s the nutshell mate ■■

Currently the speed limit is 40 mph and only about 20% of us good drivers follow that…So if the limit is increased all you idiots that speed constantly will be on the limiters on A roads . . I could easily drive at that speed on some roads but i choose to NOT break the law. I’m paid by the hour and nobody will pay any fines if i was to get a ticket so sit back a 40 mph and chill

So because you keep to the speed limit your a good drive ?
So anyone that don’t agree with what you do is a idiot ?
Who is asking you to break the law ? (This is for a law CHANGE)
So am i and i can make 20min a day by doing 40mph - tax and you walk away with £1.00
But if someone else is going to break the law then its up to them and got nothing to do with anyone else.
Geeeesh some people, where do you people get off feeling the need to force your opinion they hold down others throats ■■? people like you are exactly why there is no peace in this world and why various religions can’t even get on, next you will want to cut my head off if I don’t do the speed you want to do or share the same opinion about what is more suitable ■■ Maybe the bigger men in discussion are the ones who can listen an share an opinion whilst respecting someone else’s without resorting to childish name calling ?
Surely the idea of a legal 50mph would encourage far more people to abide by the speed limit, at the moment that limit is so stupidly slow that if your gonna speed what difference does 50 or being on the limiter make, in some people’s eyes your gonna get nicked anyway do might as well go the whole hog, the only reason I choose to peg it a 50mph generally is so I have half a chance of spotting the sneaky ■■■■■■■■ while they play hide and seek, placebo for sure but some hope better than none eh ■■?
A fair devils advocate position would be the 10% rule, on top of the now 50mph encouraging people to sit on the limiter, however they should even that out by increasing the fine and points to discourage that if your caught at 10% +1, then that 10% would allow for genuine difference between caliberation.
i personally think it would be safer as you will have less ■■■■■■■■ car drivers taking risks to overtake you. but on the other hand you will have brake, greenpeace, friends of the earth and every other tree hugging nanny state bred charity/support group demanding that it is reduced they wont look at things like abs etc .

You forgot the Nationwide Guild of Sausage Makers in your list. (Harry Monk is the Chairman)
ABS only stops the thing skidding to a halt, it still needs the same input from the driver, and you forget that car drivers are like sheep, if one crosses a dyke, they all will, even though the first one fell in!

I think we need an update…
We may need an update, we are using an idea from 1432 in which the 40/- suffrage had a say. These are the people that voted in a democratic style. The same thing is in place today, except it is not limited to 40 shillings.
Can you honestly see Joseph Public of Acacia Avenue voting for faster trucks?
It is a crazy situation that one road can have 3 speed limits for 3 different types of vehicles i.e.
Cars 60mph
All PCV 50mph
All LGV 40mph
I hold both LGV and PCV and split my time between trucks and coaches so see it from both sides.
I was out in an artic yesterday and had 20 tonnes of compost on so the 40 limit was spot on as far as I’m concerned in that situation.
My main LGV “gig” is driving 18 tonners taking trussed rafters to building sites, on a single carriageway even when empty the law says I’ve got to stick to 40mph. I’m driving my old coach on a 5 day school “holiday” next week (I do the same job every year) and on the same stretch of roads loaded with kids and luggage I’ll be able to blat along at 50. It makes no sense, 2 vehicles, same max gross weight but different rules.
IMHO every “A” road should have one appropriate limit that applies to all vehicles, the “blanket” limits should go. If it’s a narrow twisty road full of blind bends everything should be doing 40, if it’s a a straight wide road like the new Crowland by-pass a higher limit, say 50mph for all traffic is the right way to go.
As frustrating as the current speed limits are though my licence is my living so I’ll be abiding by the laws. Sorry if that upsets anyone sitting behind me but I’m pretty ■■■■ useless to my wife and son if I make a choice to exceed a legal speed limit and either end up with enough penalty points to render myself unemployable or even worse kill someone and end up inside.
There is a lot of talk about drivers getting company infringements in these forums, infringement for WTD, RTD, Drivers Hours, Overspeeds etc.
Suppose the limits are raised or lifted to the NSL. Can you imagine the outcry when an over zealous under-worked clerk starts issuing infringements for wasting duty time, what with modern telematics, they can track you and tell you that you were only doing 42mph for 7.34 minutes on the A1114

This…I have discussed this very thing with others several times, crazy eh.

The irony of you lambasting me for having an opinion and then forcing your own on us is laughable
I thought a forum would be the right place for opinions.
