If you were on a train or ferry, you wouldn’t have done any miles either but could still wake up in a different country.
The slight exaggeration asks you to make three or four pushes of the ok button. With an analogue you have to write names, dates and place, do sums and fill in lines on the reverse.
I prefer a simple digital card, it totals the driving up, it writes it all down for you and keeps it in its own memory, rather than a dog eared diary
I much prefer the digi card aswel, only thing I dont like is the fact it counts a minute even if ive just shunted for say 5-10 secs or in heavy start-stop traffic, if it could count up in seconds it would be faultless in my eyes.
i hate the rounding up aspect aswell
last week i parked in the yard after doing 9.47 hrs driving, most of it in and back out of central london yet according to the tracker id ony done 9 hrs driving

To be fair to the old tachograph…you do not HAVE to do any sums. Working out how far you drove is purely optional.
My biggest gripe with the digital tachos is the location of the unit. Most seem to be in places that make it extremely difficult to operate, especially when it comes to doing a manual entry. I wonder how many drivers just don’t bother with manual entries because of this?
i was the same with digi card when i first used one , i found it a little wierd at first and much prefered the disc way of things , but , i think us relative old timers need at some point to move on with new stuff …
i’v only just started using satnav after swearing i never would , old school map and pencil man i was , but give new stuff a chance and see what you think then.
jeeeeeesh the amount of times i took the wee wee out of satnav users …
give your digi card a chance , it is easier you’ll see …
guilty sa charged still on paper disc.

that was the case when tachogrph came in though was’nt it ? dashboards were’nt made for them , some odd places they got perched .

i just about remember filling my steppappys log books in and the trouble he had filling tacho discs in when they came out ( the amount of times we would be trotting down the road and he’s forgotten to put one in ). i know now that he was filling them in wrong because it was’nt what he was used too. just like us having to deal with digi cards …

I don’t know how they worked either that one was built in 1933
As you say, things move on, we don’t need starting handles or eazy start anymore either
MMMMMMMMMMMMM easy start … i can smell it now…

If you’re in heavy traffic, surely you’re still “driving” even during the times that the wheels are not actually turning? That’s the idea at any rate.
But yes, it is slightly annoying that you can be stopped, ignition off and cab locked up, for almost three minutes while you go for a pee/buy a newspaper and still have the time logged as “driving” on the digi card.
On balance though, I’m much happier using a digi than an analogue tacho - fewer chances to get an infringement for e.g. forgetting to fill in one of the fields, plus it only takes a single press of the button to see how much driving time I have left before a break is required. The card is also much easier to carry around than 30 days’ worth of charts.

And for anyone wondering wtf a starting handle is!
It fits here in the slot in the middle of the front bumper
As I have not completed any part of the dCPC, I am afraid I am in no way qualified to put any opinion on here…
Then again… I will never have a digi card.
And I only buy machinery with electric starters now… The cranking handle days are behind me…

Ah but Bob if you do come back in your dotage and feel like a bit of day work, you will need to fit a digital head in that old trader now, so never say never
well i am now digital all i need now is a job and a truck to put it in

Not strictly true. For the purpose of the tacho rules driving time is the time recorded automatically or semi-automatically by the recording equipment, or manually when manual entries are required. So when the digi counts time spent sitting in a traffic jam with the wheels not actually turning as other work then other work it is.
