Well its been a while since i last did a diary .
I took the pictures for this diary quite a while ago (end of April) and am trying to remember what the hell i was actually doing ( its an age thing lol).
Sunday-
yes a Sunday start this week .
Wasn’t too bad as i had finished up on the Thursday night (to allow enough driving on my 90 hrs on the Sunday).
A short walk from my house (approx a minute and a half lol) and i get my unit all sorted out.
I run round to the other side of the village and pick my trailer up from the local bus park.
A full load of empty salmon bins today.
Its an easy day ( no work boots , trainers today ).
i make my way from home and as i start driving through Glen Coe , the weather starts to close in .Its not cold but its a miserable bleak day.
Once through the Glen, i stop at the filling station at Onich .
Glad i am filling on a fuel card ,as the pump price is shocking !!!
£124.9 and this was in April .
As i am filling the sun finally breaks through .
The drive ti Inverness is uneventful and once i am North of the Dingwall turn off, i am the only vehicle on the road … Great .
I manage to get to one of the viewpoints at the Corrishalloch Gorge before i need my 45min break.
This is one of the places i have wanted to stop for a while .
I cross the road and wander down the small path.
The view point is a metal walkway that goes out over the gorge.
Now this is the point i wonder of i have done the right thing , i am not very good with heights lol.
Its a short walk to the end of the walkway and a long way down LOL.
The view of the waterfall is stunning well worth the discomfort lol.
After my break i head to Ullapool and then towards Lochinver.
I live in an area of large hills , but i have to say they have proper mountains up here .
There are on going bridge repairs , but at least the delays are worthwhile.
I arrive in the late afternoon , and am soon tipped.
The Salmon don’t start to be harvested till later on ,and as i was the last to arrive i will have the last load out.
Good planning or what .
The boat (don’t know whether it should be called a ship or not lol) ties up and connects to the harvest station (posh for fish killing machine ) and starts to pump the live fish out of two big on board tanks (wells).
The guys have sorted out the empty bins i arrived with , plastic liners and a layer of ice in the bottom.
The other lads on the job are in their beds already.
I cannot sleep with the forklifts running past my truck so i drop my trailer and park my unit out the way.
So its off to bed now .
Monday-
I set the clock for 4 am and when i pull the curtains i see that there have been some late arrivals.
Being the last load , i have only a part load .
It helps on the run to Ullapool, saves a bit of time.
There is a processing factory ship anchoered in the loch , lights blazing.
Trawlers land their catch onto the ship and its all processed onboard , cool .
I manage to the outskirts of Fortwilliam and have a break.
My load is just about enough tho stop the truck bouncing lol.
The rest of the run is very uneventful , i tip at the processing plant and leave my trailer to be reloaded with another load of empties .
To give me a better shift i pick up a part loaded trailer at our yard at Struchur , and tip the load in Dunoon.
Then its back to pick my emptied again and manage to get to Fort William within my time.
Tuesday-
4am start again and back to lochinver.
Today i am doing a load to a processing plant at Dingwall (top side of Inverness).
My load was harvested last night and is left sitting on the ground.
Looks like i am tipping and loading myself today.
I pull onto the pier (less distance to run with the forklift).
I then have to find the forklift.
I soon have the load off and start with the full bins (bit nervous as there are a lot off fish in the bins ).
It dose not take too long to load and tie down , this gives me a bit off time to look around.
The lifeboat is ■■■■■■■ (no dramas today lol).
The trawler is a french reg one (long way from home for them ).
Once more i am the only one on the road.
A couple of hours and i am in Dingwall (15 Min’s see,s me tipped) , a phone call to the office and i am heading for the BSW sawmill at Boat of Garten.
A load of sawn timber for Tarbert and Campbeltown.
Its a nice run to the sawmill and as i wait to load the lebherr buzzes around with its small drag trailer (wonder how hard it is to reverse) lol.
I am loaded within an hour (didn’t manage to get amy pics ) and head off down the road.
My time remaining will see me back in Fortwilliam again tonight.
I cut off the A9 and go across Laggan towards Spean bridge.
The road gets a bit narrow in places.
I pass the entrance to the estate , where Monarch of the Glen was filmed .
I make it back to the Fort with 10 Min’s to spare (don’t like cutting it that close ).
As i am sitting one of Coillie Haulages waggon and Drags arrive (top spec motors ).
Bed time again.
Wednesday-
Another early start again (getting tired now).
I head to Tarbert with my first drop ( with a stop at home for a shower and shave ).
The top layer of my load comes off and is loaded right onto another trailer.
This part off the load is going to the isle of islay.
The rest off the load goes to a builders merchant in campbeltown.
When i am empty i head to our yard outside Campeltown and pick up a loaded trailer.
Before i get on the move i notice i have a soft tyre on the trailer, so its a quick wheel swap.
No way you are going to miss the fact this wheel has been off LOL.
While the guys are swapping wheels i strap down the load.
I use this bar to get the bloody thing tight.
its made to fit into the ratchet without pulling the guts out of it (the way using a bit of wood would do !!).
Once this is all sorted i head for home (great to get into your own bed for once ).
Thursday-
The load of logs goes to the sawmill at troon, i have a bit off a wait to get tipped.
Once i have this load off and have phoned in, i am only a short hop to the fertiliser plant ay Ayr harbour.
It is not a full load (3 drops) so the short cover that’s in the rear box on the trailer is spot on .
most off the load is going to one farm and when this is off i am told to drop the trailer in the yard.
There is only 6 ton left on , but its all on the front.
Dropping it would more than likely end up with it on its nose .
So i have to get the forklift and move a couple of ton back .
Then re sheet it (looks like a humpy back camel lol).
That’s me out of time , so i am parked in the yard.
Next to our old foden loader (also a good recovery motor ).
I have not to be in the forest to load till 7,30 the next morning , so finally a long lie .
Friday-
This morning i am loading at a job at Ardentinny overlooking the Clyde.
I am loading 3m chip wood to take to the biomass power station , at Caladonian papermill in Irvine.
The Bing of wood is large and very slippy , not nice to load.
With the sap rising in the trees the wood is very greasy , and the bark is peeling off in large strips.
Its not only the wood that’s slippy , the road ain’t too much better .
Also the road is starting to sink ( you cant see too well from the picture , the left hand side is starting to go !!!).
You can see from the hair pin how much the unit has been spinning on the way in (a fine balance between speed and grip ).
I head to irvine and get tipped
The wood is being chipped on site , then burned.
wouldn’t like to fall in the end of this machine , a fine red mist on the bing …hmmmm where,s the wife lol.
I have just enough time to run back to Dalmally and get a load.
One of the wagon and drags has brought it out the forest and i get cross loaded near the end of the road.
Then its a half hour drive home ,drop the trailer and park the unit where i started on Sunday .
A lot of miles under my belt this week and a restful weekend on the cards .
Thanks for looking Niall.
