LDD - Richard's Bay to Lephalale

We flew in 3 weeks before setting off with the outfit, to assemble and load the trailer. Our ship the Greencape arrived in Richards Bay on the 21st of January, nearly 2 months to sail from Antwerp.

3 Brand new Nicolas Tractomas for Dennis Child and our flat pack girder set.

It’s first job after a 3 year rebuild.

More power than you can shake a stick at.

After many days in the blistering sun and the worlds slowest crane operator, the girder set was built.

Unloading the first gas turbine.

Megalift build and dropped into the transport beams.

Ready for the road.

09/02/2010 Leaving small crafts harbour in Richard’s Bay.

Leaving with 2 Fauns while the third is clearing customs in Durban and will catch up the next day.

Roughly around 700 tonnes with the 2 tractors.

Weaving out of Richard’s Bay.

Change of police ■■■■■■.

End of first day, parked at Umfolozi Bridge.

We steersmen worked on a rota of 2 days steering at the back then 2 days off, sat with the lead driver.

We hit major problems with tyres going bang and brakes binding at the top of this hill, so had to stop for 2 hours in the middle of the day. Everytime we had a blow out, you had to tie up the axle, which transfered more weight onto other axles, which then snowballed the blowouts. Tarmac was so hot that you were able to scoop it up in your hands.

Mountains of Swaziland in the distance.

Parked up at Golela border post into Swaziland on the Friday night. You are only allowed to travel with abnormals in daylight and on weekdays in South Africa, hop over the border into Swaziland and only abnormal movements are permited at weekends.

cheers Rob these are also excellent mate , and sounds like the roads were hot enough to fry eggs on, cheers again mate

Post of the Year 2010. Without a doubt.Great pics Rob. The first post since I joined TNUK in 2008,that has made me regret that I am retired. Must go. I,m having a re-read. :sunglasses: :sunglasses:
Pity you did not have Coffeeholic with you to paint the word picture. It would have been a classic.

A lovely set of pictures, thanks very much for sharing them. I hope there’ll be more to come from other jobs.

Thanks for the replies. That was only the first week, it took us 4 weeks to get there and 2 weeks back unloaded. Forgot to tell you about the 16% up hill gradient, with all 6 trucks pushing and pulling 900 tonnes, managed to sandwich a Mercedes Titan and bend the chassis and crack the gearbox. I will post the rest tomorrow. Due to return in mid July to do the same trip again after the World Cup as all the police are been poached for security, so no abnormals can be escorted.

ZB the World Cup. :unamused: We want more of that Top Grade Hairy Arsed Trucking.ASAP.

This is the route if anyone is interested, there is 6 loads for Lephalale and 6 for another new power station near Johannesburg, spread over 4 years, plus jobs inbetween.

Rob thanks we will be watching and waiting thanks very much
it was excellent post,
