Will you become a tailgater?

Well you’ve read it here first:-

Let’s start tailgating to save the world

Personally I will be giving this one a miss and will continue to pollute the world for the sake of seeing my family and staying alive. Wonder what they’l come up with next?

I thought that was what trains did  I’m sure that several drivers can get closer than a metre

i dont mind tailgating as long as im the driver at the front

What a lovely view for hours at a time, the back end of a lorry just in front of your nose :open_mouth:

this be gives me a scare

The train of vehicles would be controlled by the driver of the lead truck, who would be in charge of steering, braking and the powertrains of all the vehicles.

the carnage of all those truck if the lead driver as an accident bares thinking about

so in effect the lead driver is driving the whole “train”

QUESTION… DOES HE GET PAID MORE FOR CONTROLLING X AMOUNT OF TRUCKS INSTEAD OF ONE,AND ARE THE OTHER "DRIVERS "PAID LESS■■?

i don’t think so

This type of technology is currently being trialled by MIRA but there is a slight problem - the brakes on the following vehicles are linked by a wireless signal so when the front vehicle brakes, all the others do so at the same time and at the same rate - GREAT - except that outside radio signals are interfering with the wireless signals - ooops

If they perfect it then it will be possible (if all the vehicles have the system) to travel along a motorway with about a 6" gap between each one.

A talk on this was given to my local driving group about 18 months ago by one of the experts fron MIRA.

I hope this does happen. Think of all those car drivers who are going to miss their motorway exits because they can no longer squeeze into dangerously small gaps between HGVs! That’ll at least provide a little entertainment as they slam on the brakes to a stand to wait for the train to go past.

Somehow road trains have been given the knockback and we may get this variation on a road train in the not to distant future? Complete balmpots they are. Hows it gonna be more efficient on the M6 southbound from say, junction 12 down to junction 5 ? Or even northbound on the same stretch, or the M25 any of it? Stop/start everage speed 20 mph.
Interestingly Ricardos who made the report are specialists in “engineering solutions and strategic consulting to the world’s automotive industries since 1910” and if you look at their about page
ricardo.com/en-gb/About-Ricardo/Our-History/

You might gather that the old diesel engine is about as efficient as its gonna get, Harry Ricardo its founder and genious died about 30 years ago so why they showcase his achievements is beyond me. The world was still stuffing rubbish in landfills then, thats how much they knew.
I’ve a better idea how to make HGV’s use less carbon and i don’t even have a degree !! Just use them less  Companies should be made to source goods/foods etc…locally and print the “food miles” on the labelling. Simples !!
God knows what report they’ll come up with next, a motorway network and rail underground system for the Isle of Man i would imagine !

hope im in the middle, vosa got no chance of stoping me then :stuck_out_tongue:

And if the guy at the front (i.e. the driver) falls asleep or has to swerve violently?

Good idea… pity “CO2 emmissions causes climate change” is bull

they will not allow B doubles which is basically 1 unit pulling 2 trailers but they are pushing this instead? you have to wonder if the real reason that denbys failed is because the government dont want to cut truck traffic down because of the loss in fuel sales.
you can bet your arse that it would be illegal for another truck to overtake one of these things which makes me wonder if overtaking bans are about to be rolled out across the network

it won’t work for very long. BMW’s will be jammed in between the one metre gap within the first 5 miles.

Let’s start tailgating to save the world

How much tax payers cash was spent on this Drivel, :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:

I thought we had it already watching a couple of Ewals drivers going up the M/way, is the stopping distance of a loaded artic now less than 10ft ? (ok it may have been empty  )

Was the following driver,
1.Brave,
2.Stupid,
3. Trusting

No way i’d try it, like to have a bit of swerve room, rather than a flat on impact  ,

I remember watching the cctv of a rear ender and hearing the crew as to how he got a leg behind his head and survived :open_mouth: , maybe he wasn’t reading the signs at the back of the queue

Sounds great… cook my dinner and watch tv while belting up the m6.

What happens if the lead truck is say 30t, middle one 44t and the back one 20t? … could be interesting lol

I’ve thought of this idea myself, s my brother used to use the same trick on his old 125cc trial bike on the m’way. 60mph on that was as much as you were going to get unless you rode behind an HGV. Then he said you could almost come completely off the throttle as the truck was “clearing the way” through the air so to speak.

In practice though it would be impossible. All units in the “train” would have to communicate with each other, & could only decellerate/ brake as quickly as the slowest unit in the group. So that 300 BHP artic carrying 35 tonnes of scrap would dictate has quick the train could accelerate & more importantly how it quickly it could brake :unamused: .
How you going to know when you turn off is coming as well, as all you would be able to see is the arse end of the wagon in front.
Can you also imagine the fun cars will have trying to overtake a two mile long train of wagons before swerving onto the exit slip ?

What a stupid idea. Whoever came up with it should be fed to the wolves.

What a stupid idea, just so stupid. how about cars and other “trains” leaving motorway. weight differences?

more and more stupid ideas and at least someone for this thing is getting over 60k a year. haha
