*WHAT TRUCK IS THIS?* Another mystery wreck.A local HGV garage we use has had a bit clearout of their "boneyard" Lots of old truck hulks that have been used for spares have been cut up and scrapped. Right at the back I found this oddity. Ive known about it for a while but until recently it was boxed in with rotting trailers and crashed tractors and getting a good pic was impossible,

Re: *WHAT TRUCK IS THIS?* Another mystery wreck. That is a phenomenal Atkinson Tractor Unit (Borderer) Theres probably a few ole lads on here who would still get up at 3am to take that down the road

Experience is a wonderful thing. It enables you to recognize a mistake when you make it again
Re: *WHAT TRUCK IS THIS?* Another mystery wreck.Yeah thats an old Seddon Atkinson, my dad used to drive one on BRS many years ago.

Re: *WHAT TRUCK IS THIS?* Another mystery wreck.that would make an excellent restoration project for someone
If you're paid by the hour take ''THE SCENIC ROUTE''
Its not me, its my brain
Re: *WHAT TRUCK IS THIS?* Another mystery wreck.its an atkinson, i wasn't committing to borderer because some are known as the silver knight, though i don't know what the difference is
its not a seddon atkinson, seddon and atkinson were two different firms, as far as i can remember they were still only badged as atkinsons even after the merger. and no i wouldn't go back to one from a modern motor. recovering workaholic
Re: *WHAT TRUCK IS THIS?* Another mystery wreck.Hi biggus, think them 'Silver Knights' were the executive version with a heater, Bostrum sprung drivers seat and a windscreen wiper on the passenger side
With you on the makers though :- Atkinson Motors - Preston Seddon Motors - Oldham IIRC Seddon took over Atkinson in the early 70's and they subsequently became known as Seddon/Atkinson, We have got to remember though that back then Atki's where seen as a premium heavy weight truck and Seddon's where only lightweight's and I'm sure lot's of haulage co's switched allegiances to ERF's, British Leyland and the new euro imports. Re: *WHAT TRUCK IS THIS?* Another mystery wreck. The trucks definately an Atkinson, and is that Neil Evans yard Lankytim???
Re: *WHAT TRUCK IS THIS?* Another mystery wreck.I disagree that seddons only made lightwieght trucks.
they made a 32 ton unit with a rolls 220 in it. In their time they were up to the standard of most UK trucks. I hear voices telling me what to do...........used to be the boss...now it's the wife
Re: *WHAT TRUCK IS THIS?* Another mystery wreck.More specifically it is a MK1 Atki Borderer.
Re: *WHAT TRUCK IS THIS?* Another mystery wreck.
Don't think I said that they only made lightweight's but in comparision to Atkinsons they were considered lightweights. They did produce a fibreglass cabbed 28/32 tonner and then went on to release the 30/32/4 which used a Motor Panels steel cab that looked similar to the Guy Big J but the Seddon front panel was obviously different. I had an M reg one in 76, 220 Cummins with a Fuller 9 speeed Roadranger. After Seddon took over Atkinson I worked for a company that did all their export work and was around when the 400 series was introduced and did a lot of their inter factory transfers, Oldham to Walton-Le Dale to Oldham. When export vehicles were being put together there were times when a particular vehicle would be part assembled in Oldham and then taken to Walton-Le-Dale to have whatever extra export kit fitted or vice/versa. It was always a good number on this job and back in the 70's Seddon, Seddon/Atkinson sent a lot of unique trucks and bus chassis out to the far reaches of what is now the European Union. Wonder if any of them are still around especially as I remember us being involved in the export of around 40 new Heavy Duty 400 series 6 wheel units and 10 bus chassis to Greece. The tractor units were all 350 Cummins Turbo's with double drive and were exported in a semi-CKD form, meaning sometimes they looked like a push-me-pull me outfit, one fully ready to go unit with a fully trimmed cab fitted on the fifth wheel facing backwards and with all other ancillaries secured to the chassis and the only time there was a problem was when a bus chassis slipped forward in a tilt and the driver had to come back to be reloaded. Re: *WHAT TRUCK IS THIS?* Another mystery wreck.
They did indeed. I had one as a shunter at BRS Langley Mill many years ago; and it was indeed just as good as most other British trucks of the day, inasmuch as it shook [zb] out of you and wouldn't pull you out of bed!
Re: *WHAT TRUCK IS THIS?* Another mystery wreck.
Its a Mk2 Atkinson Borderer, which would have been fitted with a plastic grill, the Mk 1 had the alloy radiator on show. When i work out how to put photos on here i have a one with the two models standing next to each other. I think the Mk 1 finished production in 1969 we ran a 'G' reg Mk1 and an 'H' reg Mk2 which must have been the change over point. The Mk 2 was a far better truck to drive with longer front springs which gave a better ride.
Re: *WHAT TRUCK IS THIS?* Another mystery wreck.
Dunno the guys name but its in Smallthorne, near Hot lane. Know it?
Re: *WHAT TRUCK IS THIS?* Another mystery wreck.
Here's one of my pictures - two of the finest Atki's around! (And have been privileged enough to drive both!) In the begining, God created man. Then he rested. Then he created woman and since then neither God or man has rested!
Re: *WHAT TRUCK IS THIS?* Another mystery wreck.
Don't be so sure! I for one would and there are a few others on here who will agree with me! In the begining, God created man. Then he rested. Then he created woman and since then neither God or man has rested!
Re: *WHAT TRUCK IS THIS?* Another mystery wreck.
I certainly would. I used to drive one for B.H.King of Bedford many moons ago. Not very comfortable but loads of character and reliable.
Re: *WHAT TRUCK IS THIS?* Another mystery wreck.I'd vote for Atki Borderer
Loaded nuts around Tit, Algeria, now heading for Bad Kissingen, Germany, for customs clearance and then to (hopefully) unload in F.cking, Austria.
Re: *WHAT TRUCK IS THIS?* Another mystery wreck. The one on the right is a Mk 1.I thought the one on the left was a Mk 2.Was that the Borderer,or did that come after the Mk 2? I'd like a pound for every mile I've done in the Mk 2. I was as fit as a butchers dog in those days driving one of those! ![]() http://www.toprun.ch/truck/2009-09/it/ _______________________________________ You can let go of my ears babe,I know my job! Re: *WHAT TRUCK IS THIS?* Another mystery wreck.Think I got a bit misunderstood, I would gladly take a well sorted Mk 2 Atki Borderer down the road, I'd even go as far as to say I'd sleep in it

Re: *WHAT TRUCK IS THIS?* Another mystery wreck.Thats definately an atki borderer..but what about the "B" reg seddon atki in the piccy..looks tidy and quite rare itself these days..

Re: *WHAT TRUCK IS THIS?* Another mystery wreck.
'Fraid not - there was no such thing as a Mark 1 Borderer; all Borderers were Mark 2s. It's definitely a Borderer - more specifically, it is MTN 592L. Ex-P D Grant of Raunds. Last edited by marky on Thu Feb 19, 2009 10:34 pm, edited 1 time in total.
Re: *WHAT TRUCK IS THIS?* Another mystery wreck.
They also made a larger one - the 34:Four which had a Gardner 8LXB shoe-horned into it.

Re: *WHAT TRUCK IS THIS?* Another mystery wreck. The very same vehicle.
I was looking at a picture of it earlier tonight liveried as a recovery vehicle to Ailey Commercial Garage (Fetchum Express emblazoned across the illuminated sign). It was the same colour as it is in the pictures above, with blue stripes around it. 'Pops Garage' is still on it from when the other picture was taken, as are the air-horns on the roof. It had an SA-13 'Group' rear axle and there were amber flashing lights in the air vents. Judging by the badge on the grille, it has (or had) a Cummins motor in it. Killingbecks ran a sister vehicle, MTN 595L.
