As any succesfull buisnessman will tell you, you can’t beat advertising and getting your ‘brand’ name across, so this trailer really made me laugh. Its pulled by an Irish tractor, having a break on the A500.

Talk about stating the bleeding obvious !!

Now anyone following the saga of the door here will be pleased to know its now been fixed. About £600 for a new door .

And seeing as we have practicaly changed over to new Mercs if anyones interested in a load of steps for DAF 95/105 we have loads of them, possible swap for some Merc steps and bumpers

Now i was unfortunate enough to be held up on the M6 on the day a lady threatened to throw herself off a bridge. So, how did the new HA desktop gadjet do?

Nada, nothing, zilch !! A visit to the HA website told me there was delays of 30 minutes due to the ‘incident’, although i’d been stuck there for one and half hours when i read this. My advice? Forget HA widgets and stuff and get a CB !!

Talking of Dodo’s, i seen this on my way home from work out the dock…

No, not P&O ,the bird. It had ate that many fish it couldn’t take off!!
Up in Scotland again earlier last week and they do start them young up there. Here’s some kids on the heavy haulage job…

So , how you gonna strap it all up kids? Thats right, get some big fellas in to do it !!!

Now the topic on everyones toungue lately…credit crunch , recession etc… Well the first inkling i got about it was when Littlewoods catalouge rang up my house last week and asked my missus if she wanted to pay her payment ten days early. Once i knew Littlewoods where worrying about cash coming in i told her to order up to her limit , just incase they go bust
There certainley is a big slow down though, how lucky where Stobarts to buy O’Connors just as they are now standing about 20 units a day and no longer looking for drivers, and instead are asking drivers to take a days holiday as its quiet. The Mearsk work seems to have dried up for them, and infact a lot of the goods to the likes of Matalan ( a regular contract of theirs) seems to now be delivered by NYK containers instead. It seemed strange when i got a fone call asking if i wanted to work out of Tescos at Middlewich, they are expecting to have to cover for the (quoted) 150 Tesco drivers that are now going to leave Stobarts employ there. So if you’re handy for the Middlewich area and need some work then contact H and G recruitmentand they’ll fix you up there. Might come in handy for a bit of work up to xmas.
In the meantime, i get my work specially handpicked for me. I can hear them on the fone when i ring in, they muffle the hand over the reciever…“i got Mike on the fone here, have you got anything thats running a bit late and maybe down a small country lane or summat? What, you got summat thats not on the map and its infront of a low bridge with a width restriction? Thats perfect for him, Yep Mike, just got this in for ya…”
Now i left the Walsall area about 5.40 am and headed for Orpington. It took me 3 hours, the whole way down i was on the limiter, no rush hour traffic as i expected. Hows this for the M25 at 8.10am…

The dartford crossing a short while after…

And the other side of Dartford on the M25 at 08.25am… :open_mouth:

And i follow my sat nav to my drop in Orpington, Crayfield Buisness Park on Main Road. Here it is on the left, only problem is there is a weight limit (7.5T) and a width restriction. So i don;t turn into it, instead i carry on, consult my map and decide to come in the back way to Main Road. Struggle through the small village of St.Pauls Cray or summat and end up here about 200 yards from my drop. Good arn’t i ?!!!

Well there no way i can reverse anywhere, the village was full of cones and roadworks, its just before 9am and the traffic is busy and there’s no where to turn around. Ok, relax, first things first. Share the burden  I call the police and request some assistance, i can see padlocks on the posts and at a push i know they can be be folded down. Then make a cup of tea
To cut a long story short, at 10 am when the traffic had calmed down, i shrunk my trailer up , i only had a 20 foot on or i would of had to wait for Police assistance, and i managed to turn around by backing into a side street once some cars had gone to work. Guy in the place i’m going to says it happens all the time, so although i am a numpty i’m not on my own !!
Now you petrol heads will love what i had on board. This…

Just back from Canada after doing very well and wining all his classes. Much to his fathers dismay who would of rather he lost and gave the sport up !!!
I’m off, swap boxes in Grays and off for a collection, i’m going to be running back in on Saturday. I enjoyed my stay at Birchanger Green services, i had a good sleep and it was worth every penny of the £22.50 it cost me to park there. Stopping off at Corley services for a break on my way back i was caught, momentarily, on the hop by this guy…

I was getting out my cab to go to the bin when he approached me, Shell V8 power cap on and an ID badge pinned to him and he launched into his waffle straight away…fuel, no delivery, down road, blah blah…can i spare any diesel even just a litre or so… he got exactly a two word reply from me. At first for a nanosecond i thought he was the CP plus parking attendant. And if anyone is soft enougth to let him have a litre or so then this is the predicament you will put yourself in…

You’ll have an army of them around your cab and they’ll empty your tank. P&J contractors, Tarmac Specialists and the guy spoke with a local accent, and if he was after a litre or so you should of seen the size of the gerry cans they had.
Anyway, back home on Saturday afternoon and i need to go shopping to Sainsburys, i don;t do them cheap shops like Netto and stuff, no credit crunch in my house i need King Tiger Prawns, fresh Rainbow Trout and some bottles of Moet after the week i’ve had and i fill my trolley up to the brim. As i’m about to unload my trolley full of goods onto the conveyor belt i spot an old lady just behind me. “is that all you’ve got love, just that one pint of milk?”…‘yes’ she replies. Well you better go to another till then, i’m going to be ages here… Thats the sort of guy i am, many ignorant people would of just left her there !!!

Great diary as allways, this was my favourite part though. FPMSL.

Why are you taking pictures and using a laptop whilst at the wheel? :imp:

Why are you taking pictures and using a laptop whilst at the wheel? :imp:

Because after sitting there for an hour i wanted to show people how useles the HA widget was !!! Other things i’ve done behind the wheel Bob are…eating, drinking, making a fone call and sleeping with my feet over the wheel. Oh, and reading the news paper !! I’m bad through and through.

I think Mike you’ll find that some of the images are incriminating.
is the imageyopu wish to portray a driver using his phone / camera whilst driving?

Be sarcastic all you want, but it’s you that has to live with yourself if you kill someone and the family that has to deal with it.

God help us all! Even one of the Moderators on this site takes pictures whilst he’s driving!

You’re quite obviously facing to your right when you took that first picture … so you’re not looking at the road ahead!

Irresponsible and frankly downright sad!

:imp: :imp: :imp:

PS; Bob - his sarcasm wont hide his inane stupidity!

No Bob,they’re not incriminating at all, they’re taken for safety, training and education purposes and not all photographs are taken by me that i reproduce
Its kind of funny though, we are as a nation the most fotographed, cctv’d people on the planet. But none of the authorities that monitor like the public to do the same. Just make sure you aint doing anything stupid if anyone has a camera about

its also quite obvious in the first photo that he is stopped as the only blurring in the shot is the passing car. :unamused: and as for the laptop shot you must have been flying along in neutralpmsl…lighten up ffs you dont like the photos dont bloody look!!!

Mike-C - Great diary and a good read

I won’t accuse you of anything but instead I’ll ask a question…

In your opinion as an experienced LGV driver - Was safety in any way compromised during the taking of the pics

Would I be right in saying a prosecution is more difficult (but not impossible) using a photo as the evidence posted by the driver on here for example, that he was driving at time of photo was taken thrus endangering lives  :open_mouth:  Should authorities decide to prosecute. Has this ever happend yet   :exclamation:

As apposed to posting your truck doing 56 mph in a 30 mph zone on youtube

Well i have to be totally honest here, yes my saftey was compromised. When i was stopped in the layby on the A500 as i put my arm out to photograph the lorry in the opposite layby a passing truck nearly took my arm off. I’ll have to be more carefull. Also after i had the lappy on whilst stationary for almost two hours on the M6 i was in danger of flattening the battery and being stuck in lane one.

here come the “holier than you” brigade :unamused:

great diary as always mike! dont get me started on those bloody posts down orpington way, but atleast in the van i was in i could turn around

In other words - NO

Can’t say fairer than that    - in a word used by the Yanks - PERIOD.

you’ll also notice rog that the penguin (or whatever the ■■■■■■■ thing was    ) isnt wearing a hi viz vest or safety shoes on the dockside!!!

So those kids watching their lorry being loaded with the tonka toy, I assume one of them operates the pedals, one was steering and the other one was lookout. "Faster, slower, left, right" :open_mouth: :open_mouth:
