Page 9 of this document will tell you that you can drive on a motorway at 70 without risk of prosecution. AFAIK you can use the 3rd lane still, although it is being looked at banning 7.5t in the future.
I believe the 3rd lane ban comes into effect on vehicles that are restricted to 56mph.Makes sense I suppose. There was one of our drivers a few nights ago, normally a class 1,had to go out in a 7.5 tonner.Got on the M6,moved out into the 3rd lane and gunned it,found out it was limited to 56!Oh boy,how embarassing!
If the vehicle is restricted then it cannot use the outside lane and the limited speed is 56mph.
If it is NOT restricted it CAN used the outside lane and the speed limit is 70mph.
I’ve noticed a lot of companies still using their older unrestricted motors for rushing around… Ahh well.
Not sure about January as I thought all new vehicles MUST have the limiter and all older ones need to be fitted with them…

Unless you’re a Slovakian driving a Slovakian Artic up the M40… passed me and an artic overtaking me in the outside lane doing about 65mph…
I’m yet to see a restricted 7.5 tonner. I’ve never seen one. I’m starting to wonder if it is all a big myth.

I know, don’t you just hate it when that happens? and never a HATO in sight
restricted 7.5s really do exist got stuck with one for my Cov trunk
added 1 hr onto my night
The PROPOSAL is to have all vehicles over 3.5 tonne & buses/coaches, wether fitted with a limiter or not, restricted to the same 56mph & rules as LGVs BUT it has not been passed in legislation YET.

Yes, they are around and I have driven them. I have even driven ones that aren’t actually restricted but if you drive over 56mph it gives you an overspeed warning…

I think company cars should be added to the list

Rog, are you sure about that? I read somewhere it would be implemented on 1st January 2008, not just new vehicles but all vehicles over 3.5t .
I think that from Jan all new vans (sprinters, transits etc) have to be fitted with a speed limiter. So we’ll make even more car drivers annoyed as it seems everything bigger than a Smart Car will be now limited to 56 and obviously banned from the outside lane.
Why is it that a little van is limited yet a fully loaded coach full of kids can still fly around ? (sort of undermines the safety arguments for implementation in the first place ) !!!
According to this, 7.5 tonners will need to have speed limiters fitted.
But despite the title of the article, this does not apply to the likes of 3.5T Transits and Sprinters.

My info is from VOSA and the DfT via my MP
Not enough time to retrofit all vehicles with limiters so PROPOSAL is to impliment new law which has not yet been passed in parliament
According to the revised edition of the vosa handbook (2007) 7.5 tonners pre 2001 (LEZ) Y Reg - W Reg etc dont need limiters. Late 51 plates and definatley 52 plates do!
got a 54 plate iveco and its limited to 56 but tbh thats the least of its worries!
i also read that once all 7,5 tonners and vans are limited the speed limit on motorways will drop to 56mph from the 60 mph its at now
