Cab rat for 3 weeks and counting

Been back off furlough for 3 weeks now, and this tramping job is finally doing my swede in after ALL the years I’ve done it. :unamused:

I ain’t surprised some of you day men who have tried it haven’t lasted 5 minutes before you were chanting the famous dayman’s mantra…‘‘I like me own bed me’’ :unamused:  .if this is how you went about it.

I usually park up somewhere decent, try and arrange to meet one of my like minded mates,.and go out for a meal and a pint…and a bonus if the football is on.
So after 3 weeks of parking up.and being bored out of my skull sitting in the cab,.I felt it was time for a Trucknet Robmoan. :sunglasses:

I’m parked a mile from where I usually get an excellent mixed grill.and a pint of Worthingtons, where they have Sky Sports and where I’ve watched Newcastle get beat loads of times.
No pubs, no football, a bit miserable weather wise to go for a walk,…and absolutely Jack ■■■■ on the ■■■■ telly…so I’m severely ■■■■■■ off here.

At least I’ve had a decent scran, home made shepherds pie, home made apple crumble,.and a bottle of French biere…the highlight of the night ffs !

I’ve parked in all sorts of crap places lately, there’s no point looking for somewhere decent…I EVEN parked in a ■■■■ lay by one night the other week ffs !! :open_mouth: …,.and an MSA the week before (free parking that night btw :sunglasses: )

If I’d just started in this game,.and got the idea that ‘‘this was it’’ for tramping,.I’d have lasted a month tops…don’t know how some of you guys manage it as a routine, I strangely admire you in a way for having the patience …all.I can think of is that ‘‘Men who sleep in trucks’’ vid that was doing the rounds a couple of years ago. …■■■■ depressing.

When is all this Covid crap gonna end, my sanity is in question here.
Cheers.

ITs now 7.10pm. 10 mins since you posted you rant. does it fill more like 10hrs. Tick Tock Tick Tock Tick Tock. How many more years have you got DOH. :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

You’re doing it wrong Rob :unamused: . Old skool tramping was doing like you say, parking somewhere in town or within walking distance, a few mates/work colleagues also night-outting with you and then head into town for food, beer and the inevitable lock-in til 2am then 3 hours kip to sleep off 10+/- pints of booze and back on the road before 6am :open_mouth: .

New skool trampers never leave the cab. As soon as they’re parked up in some layby, it’s curtains round and Facebook on their phone for the rest of the evening. That’s the sum of their social interaction.

Yep.
Going on the ■■■■,in towns/cities…far and wide, was all part of the attraction, for me.
Had some good times, got to know some good people, and had a bit of a laugh.
Only do about 10 nights out per year, now though.
Secure parking only.i just eat…then go straight to bed.

Yep that’s about it nowadays with most of em.
Got to say mind, there is a happy MEDIUM,.and a world of difference between the 80s style ‘‘clubbing tramping’’ (yeh done that  ) and the let’s say …‘grown up responsible/sensible’ socialising whilst tramping, that I do today.
I need much more kip these days, so to hell with the clubbing.

Got myself sorted tonight, just eat on it’s way, couple of beers I picked up on my 45 earlier, parked in a nice spot away from others. Not like it was going to the pub but making the best of it.

Had some good nights in Pontefract, Willenhall was a regular stop too, good times.

There have been more Pontefract related divorces than any other reason amongst truckers.
I know of 3 myself that spring to mind.
It was a regular stop for me…still married btw.

Btw got a ■■■■ parking ticket last time at Willenhall 18 months ago…after my mate says., ‘‘Nobody ever pays on here’’ :smiling_imp:
He got one too.

Stafford was another and there was a truck stop with a night club on, Colonels I think it was called off the A5 somewhere, that was a laugh too.

I’ve been back 2 weeks . Have the occasional night had.had 2 and I agree it’s a bit much and a struggle .
Mainly due to fact pubs are shut
Places I know that do decent food are shut. Struggle find anyware open
Then next day is hit and miss if can get a breakfast anyware
Guess im lucky as not out mon to Fri.
Once or twice a week is more than enough for me.

The stuff of nightmares.

Could be worse, could be me :smiling_imp:

Haven’t done a night out for12 years now :sunglasses: , miss 'em? like a boil on me pecker :open_mouth:

ooh, told you a lie, did an overnight on a training course couple of years ago, comfy hotel, does that count

Since the plague happened I’ve taken to drinking the contents of my fridge whilst listening to loud country music, shouting "yeehaw " regularly and shooting stuff with my air pistol.

It’s nice to have a hobby.

You see this is the difference between us more mortals and the God that is robroy  Those of us that spend all week in laybyes as recommended by dozy, live on crisps and biscuits and wash when it rains were glad to get back to the old normal after 8 weeks furlough.
Said very much tongue in cheek
And yes Rob I do agree it was very difficult coming back but on the bright side retirement is now less than a year away

I still stop at Stafford now , not the place it used to be but found a good little pub just off greyfriars , and kernels was on the A34 at great wyrley was a shame when that place closed , proper grab a granny nights at Hardys over 30s disco , :open_mouth: another favourite was South Shields , big carpark behind the fire station , Thursday nights there were lethal

Anyone fancy a steak dinner tonight?
There’s a couple of free ones going, as the Guys they’re meant for won’t be around to eat them

Stay tuned for the next thrilling episode of Rob and Dozy’s Friday night lay-by experience
